  36. I am deeply saddened by the news of Mike’s passing. Terry, Daniel, Karin, and Greg, my heart goes out to you, and I am truly sorry for your loss. Selfishly, I am sorry for mine too, and I wish I could just give you each a hug. I cannot do or say anything but that I’m sorry and I care. My hope is that in your grief, you will be able to gain peace and comfort from each other, from your memories of happier times with him, and from the support of your friends and family.

It is hard to imagine that he won’t be here anymore to talk to, to laugh and joke with, and to admire and respect the insight and wisdom of his words. To enjoy again his simple, genuine, and generous friendship. To benefit from his clarity of thought and careful advice. These are things that over the time of our friendship, Mike shared freely and often.

My regret is that I had not spent much time with Mike in the last while, being immersed in my own world, and focused on the busyness of my own life. And now that I am so far away, I know I have missed an opportunity to share, and care – for a true friend.

Obviously, “Mikey” had a very strong impact on all of us, and in so many ways. With me, he has left a lasting legacy, a memory of a man with an amazing intellect and a big heart. He was as comfortable chewing on a difficult logic problem and breaking it down into bite-sized and manageable bits, as he was sharing a breakfast of barbecued hotcakes and sausages at the lake with his friends.

As a partner, he had high standards – for himself and for each of us. He expected that we would treat each of our employees and each other with dignity and respect. Indeed, he set an example for all of us to follow. Thanks Mike, for your spirit, for your class, and for your integrity. I will miss you.
