HALBERTSMA – Anne-Marie (Anneke)

February 17, 1931 – July 29, 2011

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Anne-Marie, after her battle with cancer on Friday, July 29, 2011 at the age of 80 years.

Mom (née van Waegeningh) was born in Breda, the Netherlands and endured years of struggle during World War II helping to take care of her brothers Huub and Wouter, and sisters Connie and Joke, while her father Leo was interned in an occupation prisoner of war camp. After the liberation of Holland, she worked as a translator in The Hague. Later in 1957, she immigrated to Canada, where she wed Henk Halbertsma. They settled in Calgary, with a short interlude in Dawson Creek, where she took on the challenges of living in a new country.

Anne-Marie was a dedicated mother to her son Johannes, daughter Claudia and son Friso. She was very active in her children’s education, and encouraged them in their individual pursuits in science, sports and the arts, as well as a love of animals. She will be remembered as a congenial soul, who valued the importance of the classics and culture, but also a good laugh. She cared for her husband Henk until he passed away in 1998, and then established her own independent life. She delighted in her daughter’s marriage to Louis Montpellier. Among her siblings she is survived by her sister Joke.

A Celebration of Anne-Marie’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Alberta SPCA, or the Calgary Humane Society to honour Anne-Marie’s love of animals. Forward condolences through The family would like to offer many thanks to Janet Bullard of Proactive Health Advisors for her attentive support during Mom’s illness, to Jolene Evans RMT for her compassionate care, and all the very kind staff at Chinook Hospice.

In living memory of Anne-Marie Halbertsma, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403)243-8200.

  4. Kerry Merriman :

I am so sorry about the loss of your Mother and a great loss to Stanley Drive. I remember the cold Cordial she would serve us kids in the summer, stringing popcorn on the tree in December, the great Dutch baking and taking us to the Sound of Music and afterwards talking about her war experiences as a young girl. Of course not to forget the special washroom seat instructions for the boys. Your Mom was a important part of my life and will be fondly remembered.

To all the Halbertsma children–Extremely sorry to hear of your mum’s sickness and passing. She and I were good friends, not ever seeing enough of each other. I was away during the week of her passing and was going to visit her as soon as I returned. So very sorry (I guess one should never put off things till later). We had such good visits together and always lots and lots of laughs. Neither one of us would ever tell our age, but were very close to the same. I will miss your dear sweet Mother with her twinkling eyes and always happy. A beautiful person- so honoured to have had her as “my friend” Fondly June Merriman.

  6. Glen LeGuyder :

My deepest condolences on the passing of your Mother. I will always have fond memories of the warm hospitality and generosity in after school visits. Ginger cookies in the shape of windmills, a chewy treat called tie-tie, picking crab apples to make jelly, and putting up with Joh & I for the countless hours we would spend making dragons, “glow in the dark” finger nails and teeth from Mattel’s “gobbley-goop” will always come to mind.

  7. I am the son of her younger sister Connie (born 1934) and I live in Holland. Anneke was always my special aunt, living far away in Canada but she’s close to me because she has often written my I letter and I have met her in 1977 and 1984 when she visited Holland. I remember her sense of humor and real interest in how my life was goning on.
I few month before her passing away, I had I long and fine conversation on the telephone with her. I also telephoned her in the hospice. She was not able to speak much but we had contact. A few days I received the message of John that she passed away.
I wil miss her although she lived far away.
I photograph of Anneke with Connie and her mother from 1936 is still on my wall. I wil not remove it.
I wish John, Claudia and Friso al the best courage, after this great loss.
