HAINES, Norman H.

December 02, 1939 – March 23, 2013

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Norman Harold Haines, aged 73 years, beloved husband of 50 years to Linda Rae (nee Preston), father to Ruth Ann Minions (David), N. Robert Haines, and grandfather to Sarah, Patricia, and Christina Minions.

Norman was born in Fredericton, NB and spent his early years in Charlottetown, PE and Kitchener, ON. Once married and beginning a family, he spent time in Montreal, QC, Chatham, ON and then west to Calgary, AB in 1973. Norman was larger than life, having many careers starting at the age of ten until his passing; retirement was not in his vocabulary. His many careers included newsman, broadcaster, sales director, management consultant and fundraising strategist.

In addition to his working life, Norman was a life-long member of the Scouting movement and dedicated volunteer with over 50 years of service, who led the team that put together the Canadian (1981) and the World (1983) Jamborees in Kananaskis Country for more than 16,000 youth from around the world. He was a board member and past president of Heritage Park, a long time Rotarian, and participated as an elder and choir member for many years at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Norman received many accolades and awards over the years but the ones he treasured most were the Silver Wolf from Scouts Canada, the Paul Harris Fellow and Cliff Dochterman awards from Rotary, and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal. Norman valued his leisure time and nothing gave him more pleasure than to enjoy the company of his friends in the South Bank Short Line Model Railway Club every Monday night. He especially enjoyed weekends away in his motorhome with his wife, family, and friends.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. Mark Grainger and Dr. George Barr, Calgary EMS and the attending staff at Rockyview & Foothills hospitals for the excellent care Norm received.

A Celebration of Norman’s Life will be held at Heritage Park in Gasoline Alley, Calgary, AB on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Friends and family may wish to remember Norman with a donation to a charity of their choice

In living memory of Norman Haines a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

Offer Condolence for the family of HAINES, Norman H.

    Haines Family,
I casually got to know Norm nearly 20 years ago at my first South Bank Short Lines Boomer Auction. More recently at the last few auctions, my wife, Penney, would bid, and jokingly Norm would tease her, in most cases she was the only bidder! We were both glad to have known him. Keep on chugging and auctioning those “gems”.

  13. Maureen CHurch :

    Dear Mrs. Haines:

Of only today that I learned of Norm’s passing and such a hole I feel in my heart and soul. I did not have the pleasure of meeting you but was a business aquaintance of Norm’s because of the #1 Leduc Discovery Centre. Over two years I was able to learn about him, his successes, his pride in his family, and his love of work. We are able to partner together to secure funding for a number of non-for-profit projects for both the Centre and the orgnaization that I worked for. When I left such organization, Norm was the first to ensure that I was doing “OK” and if I ever needed to talk, he was there.

Mrs. Haines – my condolences to you and your family.

    Warmest regards,
    Maureen Church
