HAIGHT – Gordon Leroy P. Eng

May 11, 1929 – May 20, 2010

Gordon Haight, beloved husband of Beverley Haight of Calgary, passed away on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at the age of 81 years with his family by his side.

Gordon graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering from Queen’s University at Kingston, Ontario in 1952. Upon graduation, he joined Imperial Oil where he enjoyed a successful career, ultimately retiring as Vice President and General Manager of the Production Department of Esso Resources Canada Limited. After a short retirement, Gordon returned to the oil patch as Vice President of Operations with BP Canada for three years. Gordon and Beverley spent the following eighteen years enjoying their winter months in Tucson, Arizona with many fellow Esso retirees and cultivating new friendships with Canadians and Americans alike. The summer months were spent in Calgary, enjoying family, travel and golf and visits with the Toronto family. Gordon excelled at all sports and in particular was an accomplished track and field athlete, being awarded the Viscount Alexander Trophy for Canadian Junior Amateur Athlete of the Year in 1947. He was an avid golfer, spending over fifty years as a member of the Calgary Golf and Country Club. He was also a basketball, baseball, football, and hockey fan. He loved cheering on the Calgary Flames and Stampeders, the Toronto Blue Jays, and the University of Arizona Wildcats. Gordon had a warm smile and a welcoming heart. His sharp wit, sense of humour and remarkable intellect will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Gordon is survived by his loving wife of fifty-four years; his daughter Cheryl; son Gordon (Joanne); and granddaughter Keeley, all of Calgary; his son-in-law Barry Craig and grandchildren, Jamie, David and Christie Craig, all of Mississauga; his brother Bud (Jean) Haight of St. Albert; and nieces, Brenda (Larry), Linda, Wanda, and Glenda. He was predeceased by his parents Harold and Leanor Haight; and daughter Susan Craig.

Friends are invited to a Celebration of Gordon’s life at the Calgary Golf and Country Club (one and one half blocks west of Elbow Drive on 50th Avenue S.W.) on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
