HAGG, Joyce Elaine

March 18, 1924 – Calgary, Alberta
February 5, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

On a sunny crisp, clear afternoon, Joyce went home where she longed to be. We are grateful to have been together to comfort her at her passing. She was the beloved wife and steadfast companion of the late Larry Charles Hagg. Joyce moved frequently during the Depression. She became a registered nurse, Class of ’45 U of A, marrying soon after. By 1952 their house in Champion AB which lacked the comforts of the day was bursting at the seams with three children so Larry re-enlisted in the RCAF. Five transfers ensued before they put down roots in Red Deer. Her quiet faith and singing in the choir were important connections for Joyce who treasured her association with Gaetz Church from 1963-2001. A twenty year RDGH nursing career was rewarding but being Grandma was her delight. Months before Larry’s passing they had moved to Calgary in 2001 for his care. Joyce began anew at The Sierras then at assisted living. When her world became small in 2015 AgeCare Walden Heights was such a blessing. Joyce was a woman of wisdom, determination and style who enjoyed social bridge, golf, music and open house. Her story is more than favourite songs, confections, picnics or card games. Mom created opportunities for us to be together, laughing and sharing experiences, deepening our bond. Mom loved us a bushel and a peck: John (Kristin), Daniel (Toni), Karen, and Timothy (Karin); their eleven children and spouses and their ten grandchildren.

You are invited to a Celebration of Joyce’s Life at Christ Church Elbow Park (3602 – 8th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to a health related charity of your choice.

In living memory of Joyce Hagg, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  2. So sorry for your loss. I have many fond memories of Joyce, from the Gaetz Church choir, from when I worked at the Red Deer hospital but most of all from her friendship with my mom & dad, George & Elisabeth Francis. Larry & Joyce and Mom & Dad spent many, many hours playing bridge and enjoying each other’s company.
Peace and comfort to all of you, Brenda Francis Reid

  4. Brenda Inglis :

    Hello Karen,
My Mom forwarded your Mom’s obituary. I was sad to hear of her passing, but imagined that she had had great life with her family. I was thinking about her the other day because I was making a cherry loaf and remembered the ones she made when we were young. I was trying to imagine if mine tasted like her’s or what I remembered at least. Hope you are well. Thinking about you.
    Brenda Inglis(Walsh)
