December 27, 2013 – Calgary, AB

Kenneth Nickoly Gulstene of Calgary, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 27, 2013 at the age of 78 years.

Ken was the youngest of Jens & Gudrun Gulstene’s six children. Ken was a gifted woodworker, beautifully skilled at drawing with pen and ink, a lover of birds, fine wine and golf.

Ken is survived by his three children. Kevin Gulstene, Sheila Seeley, Arne Gulstene as well as 7 grandchildren. Ken is also survived by Maxine, his wife of 14 years and her two children Ruth Holland and Rod Richardson as well as his sister Inez Scott.

Ken was predeceased by Evelyn, his High School sweetheart and wife of 39 years. Ken was also predeceased by his siblings Eric, Anna, Martha and Pete.

Ken was born on the family farm near Foam Lake Saskatchewan. He was the first in his family to graduate from University. He attended the University of Saskatchewan’s department of engineering and worked as a geophysicist with Imperial oil for 35 years and in many parts of the world. Ken started his career working on seismic crews in southern Saskatchewan and Alberta. Ken was responsible for the 3 trillion cubic foot Taglu gas discovery in the Mackenzie Delta. Following assignments in New York, London, England and New Jersey, Ken closed his career in Jakarta Indonesia and was responsible for finding a way to safely dispose of the CO2 in the massive Natuna gas fields. Ken retired to Calgary with Evelyn in 1992.

There will be a memorial to celebrate the life of Ken for his family and friends at Saltlik Restaurant and Steakhouse (101 8 Avenue SW) from 3:00PM to 6:00PM, Friday January 3rd. All those who knew Ken are welcome to join his family to remember.
