GUEST, Eleanor (nee Crandall)

February 28, 1925 – May 4, 2012

Eleanor Guest, beloved wife of Nipper Guest, passed away on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at the age of 87 years.

Eleanor was born in Brantford, ON and grew up in the village of Roches Point near the South end of Lake Simcoe. She came to Calgary in 1950 to participate in the oil boom as a secretary for Shell Oil. Eleanor married Nipper in 1954 and left the work force to raise their three sons. Eleanor was an ardent reader. She read aloud very well and with much enthusiasm. Her greatest joy was reading classic English children’s stories, especially Winnie the Pooh and Wind in the Willows, to her family. She also read text books for blind university students. Other pleasures for El were summers at the log cabin on the shore of Shuswap Lake, with fires on the beach, swimming, canoeing or berry picking with her sister Iris. She went on many study / travel trips with U of C Continuing Ed and the Calgary Zoo. For fifty years she enjoyed sunrises, sunsets and a panoramic view of the Rockies from her hillside home in Bearspaw. She was a well-loved aunt to many nephews and nieces. Although she disliked cooking, her apple, cherry and berry pies and date squares were legendary. In her fifties Eleanor resumed her interrupted schooling to get a Senior Matriculation. She studied French in a regular class at Cochrane High were she established a mutual respect with her young classmates and soon became a popular and inspiring student. As well, she went to a French immersion school in Quebec and attended French classes at the University of Calgary.

Eleanor is survived by husband Nipper; sons, Fred, Gordon and Bruce; grandchildren, Vanessa, Kristina and Conrad; a sister Iris; and a brother Gordon. She was predeceased by siblings, Evelyn, Tom, Elsie, and Blythe, all of Ontario.

Eleanor succumbed to Alzheimer’s Disease which developed in her mid-seventies. She was attended by caregiver Lou Lefebvre with love, compassion and many a laugh which eased her latter years. The family will forever to in debt to Lou. Eleanor’s last years were spent peacefully at the Bethany Care Centre in Cochrane in the competent care of cheerful staff there. As a constant visitor, Lou continued to care and advocate for El.

There will not be a funeral service. A memorial gathering for Eleanor will be held in the family home in last June. A mural in the Alzheimer wing at the Cochrane Bethany has been dedicated to her memory. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Bethany Care Cochrane, 302 Quigley Drive, Cochrane, AB T4C 1X9, Telephone: 403-932-6422.

In living memory of Eleanor Guest, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot Chapel, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. Telephone: (403) 241-0044.

  2. Doug & Pat Montgomery :

We are deeply sadden to have heard of Eleanor’s passing. We will always remember the fun times with the Guest family at the Guest’s cabin on the Shuswap Lake. Eleanor was always so generous & kind. She made us feel welcome, and Doug was just one of the boys to her. Sailing on the Shuswap Lake with Bruce in a storm kept Eleanor on edge, but a good glass of scotch kept her relaxed. These are the fond memories she created for us, and we are grateful to her for them.
Our sincere condolences, Doug & Pat Montgomery
