August 7, 1931 – August 2, 2012
Elfriede Grillmair of Calgary passed away on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at the age of 80.
Elfriede (Elfi) was born in Vienna, Austria and after surviving WWII as a child refugee, studied commerce at the University of Vienna. She lived an incredibly adventuresome and romantic youth, hiking, climbing, hitchhiking and wheeling a moped around Europe and North Africa. She emigrated to Canada in 1955 and earned a degree in Geology at the University of Alberta in 1959. After co-founding and serving as business manager for Rocky Mountain Guides Ltd. (later Canadian Mountain Holidays), Elfi worked as a petroleum geologist for Banff Oil and later BP Oil. She coauthored two important scientific papers with her brother, Johann Steiner (d. 1982), on possible Galactic causes for glaciations and sedimentation on Earth. Elfi spent much of her later years developing an alternate theory of gravity and a means by which to better predict major earthquakes.
Elfi is survived by her son Carl (Louise), her daughter Elizabeth (Mark), grandchildren Wyatt (Jessica), Alexander, and Camille (Anthony), great-grandchild Jacob, brother Josef Steiner, nephews Shepherd Steiner, Manfred Pastler, Martin and Gary Eichenauer and niece, Anita Eichenauer.
