GRIFFITH, Winnifred

May 9, 1914 – April 7, 2013

Our dear Winnie passed very peacefully at home on Sunday, April 7, 2013, one month and one day before her 99th birthday.

Winnie was born in Beddington, Alberta on May 9, 1914, and grew up on the family farm with her many siblings. She was fond of saying, “We made our own fun”.

She later taught in the one-room schoolhouse in Beddington where her students included her younger siblings, all riding to school together each morning on horseback. She moved to Edmonton to teach school until 1955, when she married Earl Griffith. Together they enjoyed salmon fishing at their summer home in Qualicum Beach, and Earl even taught her the art of fly fishing. Their love of the outdoors prompted them to build a handsome log ranch house near Okotoks, with a beautiful view of the mountains and foothills. They lived happily there until Earl’s untimely death in 1977, after which Winnie moved back to Calgary. She never lost touch with her Okotoks friends and continued to golf and curl with them whenever she could.

Winnie always had a smile, lighting up her face and the whole room. She had a great love of the arts as well, and enjoyed attending plays and concerts. She dearly loved socializing and entertaining, and was a fabulous cook. Everyone who knew her remembers her exquisite taste in clothing and jewelry. Winnie was gracious, loving, caring, and kind, and especially loved to spend time with her large extended family. As well, she maintained a large circle of personal friends, always making a point of visiting any who were ill or bereaved. She is predeceased by her brothers and sisters, and survived by her many nieces and nephews and their families.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to the many caregivers from Calgary Family Services who made it possible for Winnie to remain in her home during her final years. And we honour and thank Winnie’s longtime friend, Rita Violini, for her devoted and selfless care of Winnie to the very end.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. We gratefully decline flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to the Calgary Food Bank.

In living memory of Winnie Griffith a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
