August 1, 1933- San Giovanni in Fiore, Cosenza Calabria, Italy
November 7, 2013 – Calgary Alberta
The peaceful passing of Giuseppe ‘Joe’ Greco occurred at the Peter Lougheed Centre in Calgary on Thursday, November 7 with his family by his side.
Joe’s passing follows many years of failing health; and although he will be dearly missed by Caterina along with his entire family, we rest assured that he has found ever lasting peace.
Joe left San Giovanni in Fiore, a small community in Cosenza, Calabria, Italy in 1958. He arrived in Calgary, traveling through Halifax’s Peer 21, with a suitcase and the dream of making a better life for his family in what became his new home.
Through the 60s and 70s Joe worked as a labourer on many of Calgary’s iconic landmarks including the airport, Calgary’s first convention center, the former Greyhound building and the university. Later on when he worked with the CNIB, people often said “the grounds were the most beautiful they had ever been” and they could tell he always put his heart into his work.
Joe always put his family’s needs first. He was always known as a friendly happy man who worked hard and never once budged on his principles and beliefs.
Joe was a passionate gardener. His garden, lawn and green house were admired by many of his Pine Ridge Neighbours. He was an enthusiastic fisherman, avid camper and along with Caterina, a skilled hunter of wild mushrooms.
Joe was a home vintner and was always proud of the wine he made. He eagerly shared his wine along with a home cooked Italian meal with anyone who happened to visit.
During one of Calgary’s worst blizzards, Joe went out with his work crew to help stranded people without thought for his own safety. For more than 25 years, Joe worked tirelessly to insure that his wife and family would be well cared for; a goal which he attained.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Caterina, daughters Maria Teresa (Wayne), Serafina (Antonio), Lucia (Mike) and son Luigi (Liz); grandchildren Ashly Anne, Lisa Marie, Marc Antonio and Sebastian Joseph; great-grandchildren Shayden James, Abigail Catherine and Darwin Grant. He is also survived by sisters Maria (Sicily), Rosa (France), Serafina (Calgary) and Luigina (San Giovanni in Fiore) and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers Antonio, Francesco Saverio and Salvatore.
