GRANT – George Walton

October 25, 1952 – July 30, 2010

George Walton Grant was born in Winnipeg on October 25th, 1952 and died suddenly and unexpectedly at home on July 30th, 2010. He was one of four children born to Murray and Beatrice Grant.

George loved growing up in Winnipeg but chose to leave after graduating from the University of Manitoba to explore new opportunities in Calgary. It was shortly after he arrived there that he met his future wife Audrey. They married on June 30th, 1979 and had three amazing children that were the lights of George’s life. He was extremely proud of them. George was an avid golfer with a single digit handicap that he worked hard at maintaining. He was a long time member at Elbow Springs Golf Club and was thrilled to hold the title of Senior Men’s Champion for the 2008 season. He was an excellent sketcher and was just beginning to expand his talents by taking some painting classes. He was a big fan of the CFL and although the Stamps were his team, he still had a soft spot in his heart for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. George loved to travel and was very happy to see all of his kids spread their wings and span the globe this summer. George generously donated his time to good causes. He often canvassed for The Lung Association, The Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Alzheimer’s Association and he sat on the board of Simon House, a men’s drug and alcohol recovery centre. George had a long and successful career as a Financial Adviser with CIBC Wood Gundy. He had a large number of faithful clients and formed long and lasting friendships with many of them. George will be missed by many people, especially his wife Audrey and their children Ryan, Adam and Taryn. He leaves behind his siblings Carole Small, Jim (Merle) Grant, Joyce McLean, his in-laws Irene Wahl, Bill Wahl, Jim (Heather) Wahl, Laurie Perulett, Patti Wahl, Tom (Anne Marie) Wahl, Joan (Darryl) Chambers, Jane (Chris) Ellingson and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Friday, August 6, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of George Grant, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403) 243-8200.

  11. Geoff and Madeline Scott :

To the Family of George Grant,

We were shocked to read of George’s sudden passing in the Herald today.

We were part of his CIBC Wood Gundy “family” of investors. We so much appreciated his sincerity and very ethical approach to investing. He had our complete trust and felt that, no matter how small the account was, he treated each item as if it were of great importance.

It was interesting to have Adam being part of the Wood Gundy team for a short time this spring and we wish him success in his career. He has had an outstanding example from which to learn.

My Mom first met George as a broker early in his career. She didn’t trust just anyone! Not long after, my Dad started to invest with him. George and Dad celebrated their birthdays on the same date – and George never forgot it! George was so kind to us in helping us, as executors, wind up their accounts when they passed away. My brother, my sister, and our daughter have all invested through him. We really considered him to be a friend through many years. We too will miss him very much.

May the memories you have of George be of comfort. He was a gem.
You are all in our prayers.

    With sincere sympathy,
    Madeline and Geoff Scott

We are saddened to hear of George’s unexpected death. We remember the many evenings we had together as neighbours in Strathcona, enjoying good company and great food and can now laugh about the time we had to come running home in the snow to find the fire trucks at our house and the smoking microwave out on the deck! Though we haven’t seen you often in recent years we will keep you in our thoughts and prayers

  18. Laara Zimerman :

    Audrey, Ryan, Adam and Taryn,

George has been a friend and colleague of mine since the early 1980’s, but more importantly he was my best “work” friend.

He was also probably one of the only Consultants who I would have trusted with my own account, and that’s saying a lot!

When I needed to grouch or share a confidence he was always there to listen and happy to tell me about his family and what was going on with him. If I ever needed an idea I’d call him and he would always share what he was doing and give me ideas when I had none of my own. If I complained about the travails of being a consultant, he would cheerfully commiserate with me but say, “where else could we get a job like this, anyway??”

He was also the first person I would call to find out what the “scoop” was on the 6th floor, or if I had a personal secret to share.

He was a straight arrow, ethical, honest and sincere, in his business life and also in his personal life and when he agreed to sit on the Board of Directors with me at Simon House, a residential drug and alcohol treatment centre, I was thrilled. He felt that he wanted to “give something back”. He immediately got involved and volunteered for the finance committee and among other things, helped us raise the money for our “beautiful new building”. It seemed like at least once every other month he’d come to Board Meetings with a bag of clothes for residents that needed them.

As well, on a professional level he was very giving both of resources and his own personal time as I’m sure the people he worked with will testify to.

I’ll miss George saying to me “Hey, Zim, what’s going on?”, and know that personally, as well as professionally, my world will have just a little less sparkle to it.

Stay strong and stay together. All five of you are in my prayers.

    Laara

I was shocked to read of George’s passing.
My late husband, Graham, and I were George’s clients in the ’90’s. George was always a true gentleman, proud of his family and caring for others. An artist myself, I enjoyed our conversations about art, particularly the beautiful paintings hanging on the walls of his office. Please know that although you do not know me there are many more like me who were touched by George’s passing and share your sorrow.

It was with deepest sadness that I heard of George’s sudden passing. Over the years, our collective paths crossed many times, under many circumstances. One of the ‘constants”, was always his intellect, smile, wit, unforgettable laugh and his love and commitment to you and your family. George was truly a great guy.

Hey George, I know you are up there in heaven and I am saddened that a person of your character has left the planet. I just want you to know that i will never forget the day that you took my jersey order on face value when I didn’t have the money to put a pre-payment. I was 11 years old at the time. I was starting up a floor hockey program at my public school. You bought into my plan and I did wind up collecting all the money from the other guys… eventually. Thanks for trusting me. When I think of you, I also think of Bryce Reid and Comet Sports. I spent many an hour checking each hockey stick for whip. I really didn’t know your family but I do want to send them my condolences. You were one of the good guys that graced my path in my life. Thank you for being there for me. Rob MacDougall

    To the Grant Family,

Margaret and I were deeply saddened by the news of George’s sudden passing. We were in Ontario on vacation and unfortunately were not able to attend the service on Friday. George has been our investment advisor for 8 years and had our complete trust and confidence. We had met with George for a scheduled portfolio review on Monday, July 26th and left the meeting with his usual excellent advise and ideas. We get some comfort from knowing that we were able to meet with George so recently. He was a great listener, tremendous advisor and a kind man that always made us feel that he had our best interests at heart. Our deepest sympathy to your family.

I was deeply saddened to hear, during my trip to Alaska, that George had passed away. I will miss him very much and will think of him often. He was such a good man and he taught me much about the biz. George was also my CSC instructor and I recall vividly when I then discovered that I had been hired to be his sales assistant.
