It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we must announce the passing of Rainer Grabow who passed away peacefully at the age of 59 with his wife Sandra by his side in Calgary at 10:30 am on Sunday September 30, 2012.
Rainer was born in Berlin Germany and immigrated to Toronto, with his parents in 1958 on the ship New York/New York. He grew up in Toronto and later moved to Peterborough Ontario to attend college at Sir Sanford Fleming. He married the love of his life in 1973 and they moved to Calgary in 1979 with their two small daughters and had a third daughter in 1981. His girls gave him five grandchildren that he adored.
Rainer was always a very hard worker and a good provider. He took great pride in being a wonderful caring husband, father, grandfather, son and brother to his family. Rainer worked in the construction industry in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s in Calgary and then started a career as an estimator in the disaster restoration/insurance field for Csar Construction until an early retirement in 2004. Rainer was a true sportsman he was very passionate about The Calgary Flames & NHL hockey and enjoyed, baseball, bowling, golf, fishing, swimming, boating, lawn bowling & horse shoes. He loved the outdoors, nature and had a wonderful respect and fascination for wild animals and wildlife art. In his last days Rainer would surprise us with his amazing wit, strength and determination.
He was surrounded by the overwhelming love of his family in his last days and he was pleased to say “that he had a good life and he was a lucky man”. Rainer is survived by Sandy his loving wife of 42 years, children, Alison & (Denis) Zimmer of Pompano Beach FLA, Sara &(Jeffrey) Stoner, Ginny Grabow, grandchildren, Troy, Shay, Ava, Jack & Wes. His mother, Inge Grabow, sisters, Sylvia Valantine & Diana (Greg) Locke, nephews Clayton, Cody of Calgary & niece Bridjet from Okotoks. Stepmother Elke & companion (Joe), step-brother Frank (Angela) Luscher, step-sister, Petra & (Rick) nephews and niece. Along with all the loving extending family, from the Hollingsworth side, brothers- in- law, Jack & (Helen), Jim & (Tanya), sisters-in-law, Susan & (Jerry) Werhun, nephews Jason & Jesse, Sharon & (David) Carr, Laura & (Ian) Turner and numerous nieces and nephews in Edmonton, Peterborough, Campbellford & London Ontario.
He is predeceased by his father Gunter Grabow in 2006.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate Rainer’s life at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E. Calgary AB) on Tuesday October 9th, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. A gathering will be held immediately following the memorial service at the home of Sara & Jeff Stoner to share more stories and adorations of Rainer’s life. Rainer’s family would like to thank all those who cared so kindly for him over the last several years, along with the Staff and residents at Walden Heights Age Care centre, the High River Hospital, Foothills Hospital, Seniors Day Program in Okotoks (urgent care), and the amazing staff at the Southwood Hospice.
A special thank you to his Dr. Leon Greeff from Fish Creek Medical for always treating Rainer with care, kindness, respect and the dignity he so richly deserved.
