GOUGEON, Greg Kenneth

February 14, 1962 – April 20, 2012

Greg Gougeon, beloved husband of Dianne Gibbie of Calgary, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 20, 2012 at the age of 50 years after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Greg was born to Tom and Gail Gougeon (Wolfe) in Ottawa, Ontario on February 14, 1962. He graduated from Barrie North Collegiate High School and joined the Canadian Armed Forces. He was a Vehicle Technician for 16 years then went on to drive trucks of all sizes. As a boy, Greg enjoyed many years as a member of the Boy Scouts of Canada. He volunteered for Big Brothers of Calgary and The Humane Society in Comox, British Columbia.

Greg will be remembered as a loyal and loving husband. He had a true love for nature and was incredibly kind and caring to all creatures, big or small. He loved being in the outdoors, whether it was hiking in the mountains, walking along the ocean, by the riverside, or whittling by a campfire. He was very competent fireman, stoking up the many campfires we enjoyed together. He will be remembered also for his great wood carving skills, we always cherish the beautiful walking sticks he made.

Greg is survived by his wife, Dianne Gibbie; his mom Gail of Midland, Ontario; brothers Barry and wife Sandy of Coldwater, Ontario, Brian and wife Bonnie of Midland, Ontario; sister Kim and husband Tim of Calgary, Alberta. As well, his brothers-in-law Chris and wife Laine Gibbie of Calgary, Alberta, and Steve Gibbie of Edmonton, Alberta; and father-in-law Karl and his wife Nancy Gibbie.

Greg was a very special uncle to Dani, Sarah and husband Tony of Calgary, Alberta, Stephanie and husband Drew of Guelph, Ontario, Nicole and husband Eric of Chalk River, Ontario, and Andrew, Evan, Heather, and Brodie of Calgary, Alberta. He was also a great- uncle to Brooklyn, Marcus, Emily, Megan, Ashlee, Isabelle, and Aliana. As well, he leaves behind several aunts, uncles, cousins, and many close friends.

Greg was predeceased by his dad, Tom in 1994 and brother Gary in 1976; as well as his mother-in-law Carole in 2006 and sister-in-law Leslie in 2008.

When nights are cold and stars are few, I close my eyes and think of you, A silent hope, A silent tear, A silent wish that you were here.
Your Loving Family.

A Private Family Service will be held at a later date. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to any Humane Society across Canada. Condolences may be forwarded through The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the staff of Unit 47 at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and Carewest Sarcee Hospice for their kind and gentle care of such a special person to us.

  3. To my brother,

As the days come and go and the world moves on,
I know you’re still here; you’ll never be gone.

On the night the Angel came and took your hand,
we cried as you left for an unknown land.

But Heavens rejoiced as you came into sight,
For your soul was a diamond, shining so bright

I thought that I would miss you so, and never find my way.
And then I heard the angel say, “He’s with you every day.”
“The sun, the wind, the moon, the stars, will forever be around, reminding you of the love you shared, and the peace he has finally found.”

Love you so much Greg xoxo

    “You are never alone.
    For, we are beside you,
    We are before you, and
    We are behind you,
    protecting you as you go.
Look to the Heavens and know there is great help there.
The greatest guidance comes from the Stars.”

    “Although We love all mankind,
We are saddened by some of their choices.
It saddens us to let so many go, but the choice was theirs.
We see the sadness of the Light Walkers,
the Tears when they leave a loved one behind.”

“Call upon us for Strength to help you.
We give you this message so you will understand:
    You are LOVE.
    You are LOVED.”
    “There is always help.
    When you reach up,
    when you call on us,
    We are already there.
    We have Strong Hearts.
    We have Strong Arms.
Feel our loving energy around you.”

    Time Has Passed

Time has passed, the Wheel has turned.
It is time for you Greg to move on.
You will walk hand in hand with the Lord and Lady
and with your ancestors who came before you.
    Great Mother, welcome Greg
    back into your womb.
And Great Father welcome him back
    into your divine instruction.
Let him come to you and
know that he has been blessed
by your gracious gift of Life.
Let him come into your Divine Love,
    and let him know
that he has left behind a life of legacy,
that he shall be remembered and loved.
    As he enters your world,
wrap him in your loving arms,
    and welcome him back home.
Let him speak to the Ancient Ones
    to learn the greater mysteries
    that lie beyond the veil.
Give him the strength to take these final steps,
and allow him to do so with peace and dignity.
    Those of us left behind
    shall indeed mourn his death,
    but we shall also know
    that his Soul and Spirit
    is coming back
to Holy Mother and Holy Father,
and that he shall be made whole again.
We shall cry, but we shall also laugh,
for we shall celebrate the Life
that had been given to Greg .
    And let him also know
that as we now merry part,
that we shall also merry meet again.
And we now, with these candles
respect the flame of Greg’s life,
and though these candle flames shall die out,
we know that Greg shall live on,
and his flame shall never cease to burn,
and we also know that he shall be reborn anew.
Take him by the hand and
guide him back into your heart,
for this is what is right and just.
    Let him walk unerringly
down the path that leads to your Love.
This is our will and so mote it be.
    Amen and Amen.

  9. Nancy and Karl Gibbie :

Nancy and I will miss Greg’s direct humour which he showed often and last at the Sarcee Hospice. On leaving the afternoon tea party to drive home(Greg had green tea and pastries), we both gave him hugs, after which he looked up. put his hands out as if he was driving a car, and said vrrrrm, vrrrm. We all laughed. He was with us in the sun on our back deck and at the Keg for dinner a week before.
I have some lovely walking sticks he carved, and also the hobbit doors from Comox.
A visit from a Mourning Cloak butterfly the morning after he passed away seemed very appropriate.

  14. Nancy Gibbie :

When Karl took me out to meet Dianne and Greg in Comox, the first thing I noticed about Greg was his sense of humour. It was sharp, yet funny at the same time. He was also at home in his outdoor surroundings, passionate about his vehicles, and an accomplished whittler. Through the years that I knew him, I was priviledged to see his other qualities. His unconditional love for Dianne, his devotion to his family, his compassion for animals, and his unjudgemental look on life. We all felt his love, and his wonderful sense of humour remained with him to the very end. There will be a space missing in our lives, and it will be Greg’s.

    My dear baby sister,

My heart broke into pieces earlier this week when I learned of your dear Greg passing, and I cannot imagine the depth of your sorrow.

I wish I had words to comfort and sustain you in your grief, but I know there are none that will take away any pain you are feeling now. My heart aches for you, Gail, and my arms long to embrace you.

Although words seem futile now in the midst of your sorrow, they are all I have to give you. Please accept these written words as warm hugs to wrap you in, and know that I am holding you and your children, Barry, Brian, Kimmy and spouses in my heart at this sad and difficult time.

    With all our love,

    Hi Dianne
I’m so sorry for your loss, I just found out at lunchtime today looking through an old copy of the Herald. It just stunned me, I had no idea. He was my partner for a year and a half running Calgary –Thunder Bay, it was my pleasure to have known and worked with him. He was a good man and a good friend, left way to soon.
    Rest in Peace, Regards Ross.
