GORRILL, Glenna Mae

January 27, 1927 –Lethbridge, AB
February 26, 2014 – Calgary, AB

Glenna Gorrill passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at the age of 87 years.

She was born to Alice and Allison Gorrill of New Dayton Jan 27 1927. She is predeceased by both her parents; her sister, Dorothy (Soice); and her two brothers, Harry and Jerry. After graduating from New Dayton High School Glenna attended the Galt School of nursing where she received her R.N. in 1949 where she was valedictorian of her class. She obtained her certificate in teaching and supervision in 1955and her B.Sc. in nursing in 1962. Glenna completed her Masters of Nursing degree in 1968, and then accepted the position of nursing instructor at the Red Deer College where she was largely responsible for the development of that program. Glenna was a talented artist whose paintings can be seen at every one of her family’s residences as her talent is superseded only by her tremendous generosity. Audry Thompson, a long time friend and companion, shared in many of Glenna’s accomplishments and hobbies, and was a strong support for many years and for that we thank her and her family.

I worked with Glenna at the Lethbridge Municipal Hospital. I was shocked at her passing. We had a long visit
On the phone earlier in February. She seemed to be doing all right then.
My sincere condolences to the family.

  3. Shirley Shantz :

My deepest sympathy to Glenna’s family and her many friends on her very unexpected passing.
I first met Glenna when we were both students at the University of Washington and we did a project together. It was a joy to have her as a team mate as we worked under Marguerite Schumacher’s leadership in the establishment of the Red Deer College Nursing Program and during her many continuing years with the program. She was always diligent in her work, gentle and supportive of others, and she brought much wisdom and insight to both faculty and students. Her faith was lived out in her daily life and in her care for others. She was active in her community and will indeed be missed by many. I was blessed to have her as a friend and colleague. I regret to be unable to attend her Memorial Service, and pray that you will find comfort in your shared memories and the faith that guided her life.

Glenna was such a lady! She pursued excellence in everything she did, was kind and generous, and so gentle with others. I am privileged to have known her as a colleague and grateful for her support of me at Red Deer College.

  5. Glenna and I share the same church home, St David’s United. Many years ago Glenna, her great friend Audrey , myself, and some other St. Davidians worked together on a committee. I’ve long ago forgotten the details of our committee work but what I will always remember is the opportunity it gave me to get to know Glenna. She was a very thoughtful , warm and compassionate lady in everything she did, and will be sorely missed by many.
