GORMAN, Michael (Mike)

January 24, 1966 – Larne, County Antrim, Northern Ireland
November 8, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta

Michael was born in Larne, Northern Ireland and emigrated to Mossbank, Saskatchewan when he was two years old. During his school years in Mossbank, Yellowknife and Prince Albert, Michael enjoyed wrestling (mostly beating up on John but also on the high school and Saskatchewan summer games team), speed swimming, rugby and all outdoor pursuits like skiing, water-skiing, hunting and fishing. While he was a quieter person, he loved his time at the lake, with the wrestling and swim teams, and as a lifeguard and swim instructor. Mike loved being on teams and forming strong bonds with the people on those teams. This was a trend he kept throughout his life. After high school, he took a couple of years off before studying electrical engineering technology at SAIT. He subsequently worked with DJA Engineering Services in Calgary for the duration of his career.

Mike married Jackie in 1994, and was blessed with the birth of his twin daughters, Catherine and Rachel, in 1998. Mike had already battled and won his first bout with cancer before the twins arrived, all 5 pounds of them combined. His daughters inspired him to fight for his health, and he went on to compete in his first of nine Ironman events. Following each of his subsequent battles with cancer, Mike persevered, and returned to the Ironman finish line, always with a cheering crowd of fans and loved ones. Mike’s tenacity and faith in success inspired many others to push to achieve their goals, in the athletic arena and in business.

In the past few years, Mike really enjoyed getting involved with the Scotch Brotherhood and the Oilmen’s. In this group of fine people he found others with shared qualities and a common language for overcoming obstacles. He was a motivator, a quiet contributor and encouraged others to be an advocate for the oil industry in Canada.

Mike is survived by his wife Jacqueline and daughters, Rachel and Catherine. He is also survived by his parents, John and Eileen Gorman; his twin brother, John (Gioconda), all in Calgary and his elder brother, Andrew (Sandy) in New Zealand. He is fondly remembered as the “fun” uncle to his nieces and nephews, as the easy-going guy to his in-laws, and as the freight train known as “Iron Mike” to those who have ever drafted off of him.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Calgary Health Trust Fund or the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

In living memory of Michael Gorman, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

  6. Love and hugs to Michael’s entire family. I have so many good memories of Michael from the Sea Lions Swim Club to the PA Lifeguard crew. He was funny, and serious, and so laid back. I lost touch as we moved into our adult lives and it was only through Facebook that I was reconnected to the man he’d become. He clearly lived his life well and his life was clearly filled with love. I wish I could be there for his service but will be holding you all, Andrew, Johnny, Eileen, and John in my heart.
