GOODWIN – Allan Richard

September 12, 1957 – April 9, 2010

On Friday, April 9, 2010, Allan was taken suddenly, and much too soon, from his loving family and friends. Allan is survived by his best friend and wife of twenty-nine years, Suzanne (nee Randall); and his four children, Kelsey 24, Andrew 23, Jillian 19 and Tim 18, all of Calgary.

His family was his pride and joy, his life. Allan was the mentor and guiding light to his children, proven by his dedication to volunteering throughout the school years and his time spent as soccer, hockey, and life coach to all four children; no one could have asked for a better father. One of Allan’s greatest joys was the time spent at the family cabin in the Summer Village of Parkland Beach over the past thirteen years. Summers of boating, fishing, fireworks, family games, and awesome BBQs were spent with family and many great friends. His appetite for fun and sense of humour transferred to all aspects of his life: catching bats at the cabin, having the best Christmas lights on the block, rescuing his children and their friends from various predicaments, and happily being the target of many a joke are a few examples. Allan also treasured his family vacations to many sunny destinations where he proudly wore the most vibrant tie-dyed shirts, much to his children’s dismay. Allan’s love for his family extended to the family pets: Princess, Bailey, Millie and his best buddy Patches, the world’s greatest cat.

Allan was born in Liverpool, NS. After attending Dalhousie University where he met Suzanne, the two travelled west to Alberta in 1980. Allan worked for Park Ambulance (Banff), and in 1981 started with the City of Calgary as an EMT. In 1985 Allan graduated from the SAIT Paramedic Program. Allan was dedicated and proud to be a paramedic, loving his profession. Progressing to Field Superintendent after many years on the street, Allan’s most recent position was Supervisor, Planning & Preparedness, EMS for the Alberta Health Services. His integrity, patience and dedication were an inspiration to all. One of Allan’s greatest attributes was his calming effect when life around him was chaotic, witnessed both at home and at work.

The youngest of three children, Allan is survived by sisters and brother-in-law, Susan of Bridgewater, NS and Judi (Kedy) and Gerald and their children Erin and Scott, of Halifax, NS. Allan is also survived by his extended Randall Family, both in Calgary and Nova Scotia, who considered him one of their own. Allan was predeceased by his parents Raymond and Bernice (Penney) Goodwin.

Friends and relatives are welcome to pay their respects at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Thursday, April 15, 2010 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.

Funeral Services will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church (10827 – 24th Street S.W.) on Friday, April 16, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Mustard Seed Street Ministry, 102 – 11 Avenue S.E., Calgary, AB T2G 0X5 Telephone: (403) 269-1319, www.theseed.ca. The Goodwin family would like to thank the “EMS family”, neighbours and friends for their kindness and support.

In living memory of Allan Goodwin, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: (403) 256-9575.

I wanted to share with you that he spent at least half that time talking about his family. He was so proud of his children and his family was so obviously what grounded him. My sincere condolences.

We were so saddened and shocked to hear of Allan’s passing. We ran into Allan last summmer and exchanged stories about what our kids have all been doing and said we’d have to get together soon.
It was just last week, with the spring like weather, that I thought of that conversation again. We just always expect tomorrow to be there. I remember all our fun times at Douglasdale, Allan always supplied the muscles which went so well with the tequilla. He was always outside playing street hockey with the kids or helping neighbors with whatever we needed help with. He generously advised Josh about a paramedic career and took him on a ride-along. Whenever anyone thinks of Allan; they will smile. Our thoughts are with all of you. Take care

  23. Michael Croft :

I was terribly shocked to learn of my uncle’s death over this past weekend, news which was graciously withheld to allow the continuation of a wonderful visit by my brother and father to my current home in the Middle East. Indeed, we were all shocked, left all the more numb by our common understanding of the pain of Kelsey, Andrew, Jillian, Tim and Suzanne and Allan’s sisters, which dwarfs our own by a measure that only they can know. This said, and I write this before seeing what others have posted in their personal messages of condolence, one cannot help to think of Allan without a smile.

I knew Allan from “the beginning” so to speak in Randall family terms, his early days of dating Suzanne during university, where as the only youngster often fortunate to be present, I was often privy to their joking with my grandparents, Suzanne’s mother and father – saw them sneak in late – and went and explored the halls of Dalhousie where they took me when going to the library, or checking on one of Suzanne’s lab rats. As everyone who has had even the slightest contact with him knows well, Allan was a fun guy to be around!

Recalling his attention, humour, support through those moments, and those of the following years, I know some of the great love and respect Allan had for children, of which no better example is seen than in the wonderful nature of my cousins. Although each unique, all bear his mark and that of Suzanne’s– we see it in them and they are blessed for it. They were his greatest joy and his ultimate legacy, which is something considering all those like me he touched as an uncle, a coach, a paramedic, a colleague and a friend – for whom he still looms large and very much present today in our hearts.

All my love to my family at this time and always,

    Michael

  25. My name is Susan Grant and I own a manufacturing Company in Calgary. I had the privilege of meeting Allan many years ago through work. We manufactured many custom items which were used by EMS and Allan had a large hand in the design work. Every time he came to the factory we always had wonderful visits about his family, their summer vacation home, and about his home down east. He was so proud of his family. We are truly saddened by the news of his passing and my staff and myself would like to offer our deepest sympathies to his family. He was a gentleman and a pleasure to do business with. May you all find peace within your hearts as Allan has now with God.
