GOLD, Gail Joan

November 5, 1950 – Montreal, Quebec

August 4, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Gail passed away peacefully at Chinook Hospice on Saturday, August 4th at the age of 67.

She was born in Montreal and, after dating Peter for four years, moved to Calgary shortly after their marriage in 1972.  Calgary is where she and Peter established their portrait studio, Gold Photography.  Gail was a remarkable woman living and working together with Peter 24/7 for 46 years.

In addition to  this labour of love, Gail still found time to volunteer in the community, with the Professional Photographers Association of Canada (National and Provincial), the Children’s Wish Association, The Diabetes Association and Cool Little Towns.  She also sat on the boards of directors of The Bragg Creek Chamber of Commerce, The Bragg Creek Community Association, Canadian Friends of Hebrew University and much more.  Gail was presented with the Commemorative Medal from the Government of Canada in recognition of significant contribution to compatriots, community and to Canada, a very well deserved honour.  Gail is survived by her husband Peter; sons Avrum and Jeffrey; sisters Cheryl Shiell (Bob) and Judi Baron Bown (Chris).  She was predeceased by her parents, Doreen and Bert Baron.

A special thank you to the exceptional staff at Chinook Hospice.

Funeral services were held on August 6th at Beth Tzedec Synagogue.  If friends so desire, donations may be made directly to the University of Calgary, Hotchkiss Brain Institute, Cumming School of Medicine or to Canadian Friends of Hebrew University.

  9. wendy moreland and kemm yates :

    Dear Peter,
It was with great sadness that we learned of Gail’s passing from the newspaper. Wendy, Elspeth, Alice and I all have fond memories of the 15 (+?) years that Gail and you did our family portraits as the girls were growing up. At your studios (Calgary, then Bragg Creek), our houses(3), Canmore–you and Gail created lasting family memories for us. Gail was always there, brilliantly keeping the focus of little people (and, later, dogs) on the lens so that you could create the photographic art. We remember the various tools of her art–I think our favourite was the squeaky rubber rooster that she applied repeatedly to your head!
It is perhaps trite to say “Don’t cry because it is over; smile because it happened.” But we smile as we remember Gail. Thanks to you and her for what you brought to us.
Our thoughts are with you and your family.
    Wendy, Kemm, Elspeth and Alice
