GIVENS – Leo Michael

May 28, 1948 – September 8, 2010

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Leo Michael Givens, beloved husband of Linda of Calgary, on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at the age of 62 years after a long and heroic battle with cancer.

Leo’s early days were spent in rural Ontario. Throughout his career, he served as a project manager for various international companies. Next to his family, drag racing was his passion. He also enjoyed sporting events, country drives that ended at the ice cream parlour, barbequing, and Fleetwood Mac.

Leo was loved and respected within his many social circles. His Irish charm and sense of humour will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.

Besides his loving wife Linda (nee Hymers), Leo is survived by two daughters, Kelly Van Oirschot (Kevin) of Saline, MI and their two children, Allison and Aaron, and Kerrie Hart (Ray) of Calgary, AB and their two children, Ava and Willow. He is also survived by two brothers and a sister, Joseph (Val) of Pittsburgh, PA, Bernie (Judy) of Listowel, ON, and Margaret (Terry) Simpson of Whitby, ON, and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, Wilfred and Mary (nee Kelly), and brothers Grant and Paul.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church (1600 Acadia Drive S.E.) on Monday, September 13, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. A Memorial Service will be held in Arthur, ON at a later date. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the charity of the donor’s choice. A heartfelt thank you to all the staff and volunteers at the Foothills Country Hospice who made his final journey one of peace, comfort and love.

In living memory of Leo Givens, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: (403) 256-9575.

  12. Darryl McIntyre :

My good friend Leo has passed, he is now free of pain and anguish, I am so pleased for that. I am so unhappy that I will not have opportunity to speak with him for awhile. Leo was a great person, kind, generous, warm, and friendly. Just the kind of person all would enjoy knowing. I had that pleasure for awhile. I do hope to see him again in future where we will revisit things we did and laughs we enjoyed together. I well recall when he and I were on the 15th hole of the
Awana Golf course in Malaysia, I had just hit a long, long drive that, unfortunately made a little turn towards the end. Leo, true to his, levity and competetive play said “Congratulations, I have never seen you hit such a magnificient and long drive”, I began smiling a bit, and he continued, “into the Jungle.” Yes, that was my friend Leo.

I wish Linda, Kerrie, and Kelly to know that they had a wonderful father, a man who was respected, envied, and emulated. May your hearts be stilled from sadness and pain, may you smile in knowing Leo is smiling on us all.
    Darryl

  20. Dear Linda, Kelly & Kerrie: My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

    My Precious Friend – Leo

I Wish I Could See You One More Time
    Come Walking Through the Door
But, I Know That Is Impossible
I Will Hear Your Voice No More
I Know You Can Feel My Tears
And You Don’t Want Me To Cry
    Yet, My Heart Is Broken
    Because I Can’t Understand Why
Someone So Precious Had To Die
I Pray That God Will Give Me Strength
    And Somehow Get Me Through
As I Struggle With This Heartache
That Was Caused By Losing You

  22. In 2000 Leo’s smile and calm demeanour were challeged when he encountered his first earthquake lying in his bath watching the newly formed waves slosh along the bathtub high over a Japanese city. Despite the challenge his smile and infectious laughter shone through.

His smile and gentle nature will be missed by all who knew him. Regards and condolences to Linda and family.

Leo first crossed my path about 30 years ago at Bechtel Canada in Edmonton, Alberta. We worked together for a while and laughed a lot.
Our paths crossed many times over the next years. Either he was looking for info or I was. We traded information many times over the years and one thing was always consistent and that was Leo’s ability to laugh at the silliness we called work.
Leo was well respected and truly liked by his peers and I personnaly will miss the times when our paths crossed.

    My condolences to his family
