GIRARD, George

January 27, 1924 – July 17, 2012

George Girard passed away on July 17th, 2012 at the age of 88 years.

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend George. He was born on the family farm in Chauvin, AB, where he was the sixth child of a family of eight. He moved to Wainwright AB to start a business and raise a family. In 1956 he moved to Calgary where he owned his own barber shop in Britannia for 25 years.

He will be missed by his many relatives, friends, neighbors, Tim Horton buddies and many acquaintances. Although he has left this part of his life, we will always remember how he loved working on his house and yard, his large heart and giving ways with his grandchildren. The family thanks everyone who was involved in making his life more comfortable in the last few years.

George was a talented artist, musician, collector and restorer of antique cars and furniture. He was a member of the RCAF 403 squadron band, the Calgary Concert band and the Foothills and Chinook concert bands. He played many instruments such as the trumpet, tuba, drums, trombone, piano and organ. He was also a member and past president of The Pioneer Auto Club, #285 Legion, the order of ELKS, and a life time member of the French Canadian Association of Alberta. George donated numerous paintings to museums. Many of his pictures are in the shuttle street cars in Heritage Park, where he worked as a volunteer.

George is survived by his daughter Anita Gilbert and loving friend and daughter Charmaine Walls (Peter), as well as five grandchildren John, Lynn (Troy), Pam (Chris), Carey Ann and Patrice, and seven great grandchildren. He also leaves to mourn his sister Anita and brother Richard. George was predeceased by his wife of 57 years-Yvonne in 2003, his parents and siblings Trudy, Cecile, Armand, John and Lillian.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St Anthony’s Catholic Church (5340-4th Street SW) on Monday, July 23rd, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Private family graveside service to take place later the same day.
Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

We were saddened to hear of George`s passing. On our recent visit to 285 Legion, Calgary, we had a very nice visit with George and he presented us with a painting that had previously hung in the Legion. Yesterday, we hung the picture in our home in Guelph.

I was playing in the band when George got up and was dancing on July 9th. My wife took a picture of him on the dance floor. A good memory!

When I moved from Calgary 2 years ago, George played the Air Force March at my farewell party.

On behalf of the staff and management of Tim Hortons, Elbow Drive, we send our heartfelt condolences to George’s family. George was a “regular” customer who we would look forward to seeing every day. His smile was infectious and he brightened our day. We looked forward to sunny days when George would bring out his vintage car. Many customers would stop to admire it, under George’s watchful eye. George, we’ll miss you! 16. Alana Broomfield :

Anita and Charmaine, I was so surprised and saddened to hear of Uncle George’s sudden passing; he had such joie de vivre and an involvement in so many areas it is hard to believe, he could ever stop. We had some good conversations by phone last fall and earlier this year and I always felt sad that there seemed no way I could get Richard (Chico) and George together. Chico often asked about your father. It will be difficult to tell him about George’s passing; I need to do it in person and I will do so on August 3rd when I next see Chico.
I am so sorry I was not able to attend your father’s funeral but I only got back from recent holidays Saturday evening and I was unable to make arrangements with my employer. The loss of parents is like no other loss and my prayers and heart-felt wishes go out to both of you and your families.

    Most sincerely,
    Alana

Anita & Charmaine: I have many fond memories of your Father (& of course Yvonne) at many Antique Car Rallies and of George being a member of our funny little Old Car Band in the 1960’s. He was a good guy. I was hoping to see him during our upcoming visit to Calgary in August. Sincere & kind thoughts to you and your families. Bob Reeve (Washington, USA)

George was my son’s first barber and it was a delight to take him to George and hear wonderful stories. George also painted a great picture of my son. After his retirement, I would run into George — usually at the Glenmore Landing Safeway — still looking as dapper as ever. Loved seeing him in his antique vehicle in the Stampede Parades. A unique man with the warmest and handsomest smile. Please accept my sincere condolences.
