Gingues, Gilles Paul

December 2, 1951 -Sherbrooke, Québec
January 31, 2018 – Cochrane, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gilles Gingues on Wednesday, January 31, 2018.

Gilles was diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic cancer on Wednesday, December 27th, 2017 and subsequently suffered a stroke on Friday, December 29th 2017. After being in hospital for two weeks, Gilles returned home to spend his remaining time surrounded by family. Gilles was born and raised in Sherbrooke, Québec. He worked for several years as a mechanic repairing motorcycles after high school. When he was twenty-five years old, he decided to upgrade his high school courses with the goal of getting his RN diploma. At twenty-six, he began a three year RN diploma while working as a Nursing Attendant full-time. Gilles and Hélène met in 1981 while working together as classmates during their final nursing practicum. Once school was completed, they developed their relationship together and Gilles followed Hélène to work as an RN in Cardston, Alberta. In 1983 Gilles started working at the Foothills Hospital on the orthopedic unit and then in the Intensive Care unit until 1988. He then moved to the Operating Room first as an RN, then as an accomplished nurse clinician for over twenty years. During his last years of employment Gilles used his specialized operating room knowledge and worked in procurement of Operating room supplies and equipment. Gilles retired in 2014 to pursue his other passion; being a Dad and Grandpapa. He completed many projects for the family including home renovations, building garages & decks, fixing vehicles, landscaping and many other projects. He also started showing dogs with Hélène as a hobby where they made many new friends. Gilles worked on projects until the last month of his life. He was kind, determined, meticulous and passionate about everything he did. Being a perfectionist, he never settled for less than ideal work. He was full of life, energetic and always willing to help. He took pride in his work and loved to pass on his knowledge to anyone who was willing to learn. Gilles was taken from us too soon but he leaves a legacy and memories that can never be replaced.

Gilles is survived by his loving wife, Hélène Choinière; two sons and daughter-in-law, Simon, Sébastien and Chelsea; two daughters and sons-in-law, Chantal and Dan, Stéphanie and Tyler; and five grandchildren, Neveah, Aubrey, Luc, Harper and Madelaine. Also left to mourn are Gilles’ brothers and sisters-in-law, Daniel and Marie, Normand and Louise, Mario and Hélène, and Bruno and Venice; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Gilles was predeceased by his parents.

A very special thank you to Dr. C. Scotland and Dr. A. Loo, the Foothills Stroke Unit, the Cochrane Palliative Care Team and to all who have supported the family during this difficult time.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, 200 – 325 Manning Rd. N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 2P5 Telephone: (403) 205-3966, email donorservices@cancer.ab.ca.
