Laura “Jean” Gingerick passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at the Bethany Care Centre in Calgary. Jean was predeceased by her son Brian, and is survived by her loving husband of 57 years Douglas; son Keith (Christine); daughter Nancy (Rick Hewson); grandchildren Sarah, Tim and Megan; and sisters Merle Ferguson and Eileen Wise. Jean was born in Regina, Saskatchewan and although she grew up in Ontario retained a love of the prairies throughout her life. Jean returned to Saskatchewan to pursue a career as a legal secretary and met Doug in Shaunavon, Sask. Jean and Doug were married in Regina in 1956, they settled in Calgary in 1965 where they raised their family. Jean’s passion was standard bred horses and she spent many happy days at the racetrack. Jean loved horses, her dogs and she was fiercely proud of her children and grandchildren.
Jean shared a special bond with her eldest granddaughter, Sarah, to whom she passed on her love of horses. A private family gathering was held on May 10. At Jean’s request, there will be no public service. Flowers are gratefully declined; tributes in Jean’s memory may be made to the Alberta Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. https://support.albertaspca.org.
