GILLIS, Ruby Etta

December 12, 1921 – November 10 , 2012

It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Ruby on Saturday November the 10th at the age of 90 years.

Ruby was born in Lemsford, Saskatchewan, where she met and married Laurie. They ran a dairy business, delved in farming and Ruby taught school. After a short stint in Vancouver, she moved to Calgary with Laurie in the early 50’s where she taught elementary school for many years with the Calgary Public School Board. She was principle of Patrick Airlie and ended her career teaching at Maple Ridge elementary. She treated her students as her children and had many fond memories of her years teaching them. She was thought of as “Mom” to many of Howie’s friends and schoolmates supplying them with home cooked meals and often cleaning services. Once retired, she and Laurie spent many winters down in Mesa Arizona and summers traveling and camping in their motorhome with their many friends and relatives. They especially enjoyed their times at Mara Lake where they taught many young boys and girls how to ski. Ruby loved to play cards, lawn darts and bocce and especially loved to spend time with her only grandson camping, fishing, boating and taking in the Calgary Stampede.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Laurie Gillis, son Howie Gillis, daughter-in-law Judy Gillis, grandson Cody Gillis and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters, Velma, Blanche, Beatrice, Olive, Violet, Jean, and her brother Norman.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Friday, November 16, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Alzheimers Society or the Canadian Cancer Society.

You could count on Ruby help you any time you needed help or maybe more importantly, any time she thought you needed help. We will miss her.

  6. Sherry Sands [Swartz] :

My Mom, Helen Swartz and Ruby were dear friends having taught together for many years. My father Kenn and Laurie were also friends. Our families spent many happy hours together at Mara Lake, where I learned to water ski from the Gillis’ boat! Ruby gave me my first taste of shrimp with I was 17! My memories of Ruby are very fond; I hear her laughing and I will always remember her as such an upbeat person. I lost Mom last year and Dad 30 years ago, so I know how you are feeling. I send healing thoughts to Laurie, Howie, Judy and Cody.
    Love, Sherry

  8. My sincere sympathy on the loss of your loved one.
I was born and raised in Lemsford, SK. Seeing that your family member was born, married and had a dairy business peaked my interest. However, you didn’t mention her maiden name. My father was Herbert Hale. He lived and farmed in that area all his life. He possibly could have known her and her husband. He died in 2008, at the age of 93.
If you wish you can call me.
    Nancy Hale
