GILLESPIE – Clare Stewart

July 13, 1945 – December 30, 2009

It is with greatest sadness to say that Clare Stewart Gillespie passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, December 30, 2009, after a lengthy illness, with his wife Barbara by his side.

When he wasn’t out on the highway, Clare enjoyed RVing (camping) and socializing with his family and friends. He loved country music, especially the oldies, and spent many hours listening to them while holding his four legged companion, Jackson.

Clare will be sadly missed by his wife of thirty-one years Barbara; daughter Cindy (Travis) Ramsfield and their children, Brianna, Jordan and Carter; his daughter Kim (Andy) Holdaway and their children, Courtney and Cody; and his son Robert and his children, Tyler, Chase, Kyla, and Brody. He is also survived by his sisters, Leona, Joyce (Les) and Carol (Barry); brother Garry (Brenda); and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. Clare was predeceased by his parents Charles and Esther Gillespie; sisters, Karen and Myrna; and brother-in-law Clifford Styles.

I never thought when we moved home, we would never have the opportunity to hear ‘Ol Blue pull up next door, and then Papa Clare enter the front door. Many nights we sat round the table with great food, great company, wonderful conversations and Clare’s most perfect company. We lived in Calgary almost 14 years before finally moving back home to Newfoundland. Clare and Barb were our family away from home. We were included in each and every family gathering. Our children called them papa Clare and Gramdma. We are most sure and certain that the crowd above in heaven will now listen to ‘Ol Blue hauling up in front of the house, and that all the crowd in Heaven will have to best time, gathered ’round the table with good food, drinks, great old time country music and the most wonderful, colorful, delightful compamy of OUR PAPA CLARE. WE LOVE YOU MUCH!! XOXO. P.S. Make sure your waiting when we come buddy!

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal,
Love leaves a memory no one can steal.

Clare was a second cousin on my mother’s side (Parke) but after meeting many family members at the Enchant gathering last year I saw first hand what a wonderful fun loving family he had and I’m sure he was comforted by knowing they would get through this together.
    A very special family.

Aunty Barb, Cindy, Kim, Rob and families. My thoughts are with you at this time of sadness. Uncle Clare was a great man, and will be dearly missed by so many. The service today showed just how many peoples lives he has touched. I will never forget the time he picked me up in his semi and Uncle Clare and Aunty Barb took us out to Banff, and let us spend weekends there. We always had so much fun. I will hold these memories close to me and smile because of the great man that Uncle Clare was. We’ll sure miss your smile and laugh. All of my love, Darsie

  12. Sheri Elsasser :

I was dreading the day that we would get the call telling us that Uncle Clare was gone..and when that call came my heart was broken. He was such a great Uncle. I can’t imagine what it will be like not to get anymore of his famous “bear hugs” and not to hear his hearty laughter at the Gillespie partys. I am so glad that we got to have that one last party at the house in September. Uncle Clare was sure smiling seeing all the family together and when we left that Sunday morning I looked at him sleeping in his chair in the living room….and I knew…deep down..that I probably wasn’t going to see him again. That was the hardest thing in the world to have to do…walk away and know that I didn’t get to say goodbye..but as I stood in the porch looking at him so peaceful in his chair, he opened his eyes and looked at me..and I gave him a little wave with tears in my eyes and whispered,”I love you”. I will never forget all the good times we had and will cherish the many happy memories we have of him. He was definitely one in a million and will be sadly missed. Big hugggs to Aunty Barb and the kids. We will keep his memory alive forever.
