Lily “Barbara” Gilbertson of Calgary passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, October 14, 2007 at the age of 101 years.
Barbara was born on June 16, 1906 in the Isle of Skye, Scotland. For much of her life, Barbara, as she was generally known, lived in Calgary and vicinity. At the age of fifteen she moved to Canada with her mother and three of her four brothers, all of whom she survived. They left the old country to join Barbara’s father Murdoch MacKenzie, who had immigrated seven years earlier. Her four children Marina Maxwell (Ron), Lily Iona MacKenzie (Michael Zimmerman), Robert Stevens (Laurie), and John Stevens will miss their mother’s singing, her joy for life, the slippers and socks she knitted, her love for her family, and her laughter. She also leaves behind several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, and numerous cousins in Scotland. Barbara was predeceased by her husbands, Norman Van Brunt, Chester Stevens and Tom Gilbertson.
