January 10, 1920 – Harbo, Sweden
November 7, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta
Rolf Gilberg, of Calgary, passed away on Friday, November 7, 2014 at the age of 94 years.
Rolf was born in Harbo, Sweden. He was the second child and the first son of John and Karin Gilberg. In 1924 the family immigrated to Canada and settled in the Irricana district. After harvest in the fall of 1939, Rolf signed up with the Air Force and served overseas in England with the RCAF 427 Pathfinder Squadron, working with Wellingtons, Harvards and Lancasters to name a few.
In 1955 Rolf married Vera Culp, the love of his life. They spent many happy years together travelling, camping, gardening and enjoying life. They especially enjoyed the trips to Hawaii, Europe, Sweden, Australia and Alaska. Their happy life changed forever with Vera’s passing in 1997 of pancreatic cancer.
Rolf was employed by General Supplies (GSL) for over thirty years and was a member of the G.M. Technicians Guild. In the evenings he took courses at the University of Calgary as he was always interested in learning something new.
Rolf enjoyed many sports including: curling, skating, softball, golf, cross country skiing and was always an avid hiker and runner. He walked 30 miles in the first “March of Dimes” — some of it with Grant McEwan. He carried the torch for the 1988 Olympics, the Senior Games at Medicine Hat, Lacombe and St. Paul. He participated in numerous Terry Fox runs and also ran with Steve Fonyo.
Rolf was very competitive; his whole life trying always to be first, but in the case of his family he was the last to go. Rolf was predeceased by all his and Vera’s siblings. His passing is truly the end of an era.
Rolf is survived by his brother-in-law Arnold Milman; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Vera Gilberg (nee Culp); parents John and Karin Gilberg; siblings, Anne (Tom) Dunn, Ruth Milman, Rooney (Maxine) Gilberg, and Elsie (Dave) Sullivan; nephew Gordon Milman; Vera’s parents and family, William (Bertha) Culp, Claud Culp, Ivan (Isobel) Culp, Evertt (Mary) Culp, Vernon (Marjorie) Culp; and niece Carol Haase.
