GERVAIS, Monique Antoinette

October 28, 1939 – September 28, 2012

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Monique Gervais, Born in Verdun, Quebec on October 28th 1939, as Monique Antoinette Brais. Daughter of Germaine Cabot of Dalhousie, New Brunswick and Lucien Brais of Verdun, Quebec; both deceased.

Loving wife for 52 wonderful years of Jacques Gervais and cherished mother of Marc and Michel “Mike” Gervais. After a brief battle with cancer, she passed away on Friday, September 28, 2012 at the Sarcee Hospice, Calgary, Alberta.

Monique will be greatly missed by her 3 grandchildren, Chantal, Jasmine and Genevieve Gervais, her 2 daughters-in-law Bettina Gervais and Dominique Laurin. She is predeceased by her 2 siblings Charles Brais, Claudette Brais and her surviving brother Andre Brais

Monique, Jacques and family moved out to Calgary in 1981. Once in Calgary Monique worked all of her career for SNC Lavalin where she made some of the best friendships… Once retired Monique and Jacques were avid campers taking advantage of all the beauty that Alberta has to offer. During her retirement years Monique was also known as the “Ding Dong Lady”, a name she gave herself throughout her Avon years, a hobby that she turned into a huge success.

Monique was a very giving and loving person, always the first to help others and giving more than she had. She always had words of encouragement, even for people she did not know. Monique requested that no services would be held for her. Perhaps in memory of Monique, we all could do a random act of kindness and ask that it could pay forward.

To honour Monique’s wishes no service will be held. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com . If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, 200 – 325 Manning Rd. N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 2P5 Telephone: (403) 205-3966, email donorservices@cancer.ab.ca .

In living memory of Monique Gervais a tree will be planted Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot Chapel, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. Telephone: (403) 241-0044.

  2. Dear Monique, I am so appreciative that Marc called me about your illness. Please know that I have been thinking of you daily, sending prayers to you and going through memories of my visits to your place on Galt Street in Verdun where I would have the chance to abandon the unifom and wear “real clothes”, eat snack food, stay up late and watch TV!! One particular memory was when Jacques had arranged for a song to be dedicated to you on the radio and we all stayed up and danced to the wee hours of the morning waiting for it! (And it did!!)

We are both in the same place Monique dealing with a very powerful disease and thinking back on our lives and appreciating what it has given us all in the loving arms of our family, near and far. You have two wonderful boys and beautiful grandchildren! Your pride in them just bounced off the pages of your Xmas letters. (And thank you for being so faithful to them and keeping us connected)

I shall continue to think of you. And draw strength from your strength and acceptance. (And what a gift to be able to reach out to you at thia time. And again, thank you Marc.)

    Much love,
    Susan Putnam and family

  3. Huguette Savard :

    Same message, in english:

Monique dynamic woman, generous, devoted and with boundless energy she was ready to give her shirt and never counted the hours to help others. From her unmatched sincere and profound listening and empathy she would even sometimes detect others well kept problems and with her care and respect you would share them without criticism or judgement. She had a pure soul and wore her heart on her sleeve. She never wanted to hurt anyone. With great generosity she was ready to give everything, even what she didn’t have. Modest, independent and very resourceful she never sought to draw attention, nor asked for help in order not to bother others. She always thought of others and never forgot to emphasize the importance of sending a pretty well chosen birthday card to make them happy.
Good wife, devoted mother and grand-mother she was always present and listened to her love ones and, she was always putting their welfare before her own. Loving, patient and always available she could listen without judging, give without expecting and was discreet without complaining or criticizing. Despite a difficult childhood she managed her marriage and raised her two sons who succeeded both personally and professionally and has given lots of love and attention to her three grand-daughters. With courage and determination she has boundlessly successfully met the challenges that life had imposed, she can be very proud of what she has done.
Monique has left both her family and friends a great example to follow. We keep wonderful memories of her and know that she is always in our heart where she occupies a privileged place she truly deserves. If there were more people like Monique in this world we would have an extinction of egocentric jealous vain intolerant people and an explosion of empathetic generous loving tolerant human beings.
Lovely Monique may you find Love, Happiness, Generosity and Peace, all as you were, in heaven where we will meet again…

    Marc, Dominique et Geneviève Gervais

Our hearts go out to you Jacques, Mike, Bettina, Andre, and family.

My father Uncle John (who recently passed away) always held a special place for Monique – he loved to tell the story of when he took her home from the hospital when she was born. There was always much laughter and great stories whenever we got together in Calgary with Jacques & Monique and talked about the old days in Montreal and Verdun where our families grew up.

    Monique will be missed.

I read the Herald in disbelief and much sadness this morning. It has been a long time since Marc, Michel and I attended high school together. Monique was undeniably a very special person. She always had an open heart and a warm way of listening. I wish all of you strength and hope that you can let her rest gently on your shoulder as you continue on.

With warm regards and condolences to you all.

  15. Elaine Collyer :

When I started with Lavalin in 1990, one of the first people I met was Monique, who was so friendly and helpful, she made you feel relaxed just talking with her. Our friendship grew over the years and I had the good fortune of working with Monique when I was moved into the human resources department. Monique was always one of the happiest, most positive, not to mention helpful people I have ever met. If there was any way she could help you, she was always there. Even after she retired, she was still looking out for others, just last winter, I received a big brown envelope in my mail, information Monique thought I would need when I get to retire.

Monique’s greatest love was her husband, children and grandchildren. Oh how she waited for that first grandchild and how very, very proud she was when each one came along. Monique’s face would come alive and she would have a huge smile every time she talked about her family.

Although Monique left us way sooner than any of us would have chosen, we were very lucky to have her in our lives.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of the family at this very sad time.

I will miss you always my dear friend.

    Love,
    Elaine

Monique was a truly wonderful lady and she will be missed! I know Jacques has a lot of family and friends around him through his grief, but he should know that if he ever needs us, we’re there for him!
