GERST, Barbara Claire (nee Taft)

May 9, 1956 – Calgary, Alberta
November 1, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta

Barb Gerst, of Calgary, passed away on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at the age of 58 years.

Barb was born and raised in Calgary. She graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Education and was a well-respected and loved teacher for over thirty years. During her teaching career she touched many lives and turned the learning experience into a wonderful adventure for her students.

Barb was an active member at the Calgary Winter Club and in her retirement she loved to swim, travel and golf. Barb was also very passionate about volunteering. She chose an underprivileged school in Zihuatanejo, Mexico for which she raised funds in the Calgary school community to pay for the students’ learning materials and lunch room program. She spent countless hours volunteering in Zihuatanejo teaching students and adults English.

Barb had so many friends who will miss her smile and her kind and generous nature. She always inspired those around her to live life to the fullest and to be the best they can be. She will be very fondly remembered. She made the world a kinder and better place.

Barb is lovingly remembered by her son, Marc Gerst; her mother, Claire Lee (Harold Roman); her sisters, Kathryn Taft and Brenda Taft (Dennis Looten); her brothers, Bob Taft (Carol Heimbach) and Gerry Taft; her nieces and nephews, Michael, Katie and Emily Taft and Mike Allen; as well as numerous other relatives and friends. Barb was predeceased by her husband, Robert Gerst earlier this year and her father, John Taft (2003).

Family and friends are invited to gather for a Celebration of Barb’s Life on Saturday, November 15, 2014 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the The Glencoe Club, 636 29 Avenue S.W. Messages of condolence may be left for the family at www.myalternatives.ca. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Barb’s memory to: Youville Recovery Residence for Women, 3210 29th Street S.W., Calgary, AB T3E 2L1.

In living memory of Barb Gerst, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

Condolence Messages

  1. Bernice & Robert Peacock :

Don’t think of her as gone away-her journey’s just begun, life holds so many facets- this earth is only one. Just think of her as resting from the sorrows and the tears in a place of warmth and comfort where there are no days and years. Think how she must be wishing that we could know today how nothing but our sadness can really pass away. And think of her as living in the hearts of those she touched… for nothing loved is ever lost- and she was loved so much.

    The Taft Family,

Please accept our deepest condolences for the loss of Barb. We just wanted to let you know that our thoughts are with all of you in this difficult time. Whenever I see a reuseable toothpick I still giggle about Barb snapping off all of the tops of Mrs. C toothpicks at Brenda’s shower. It is these kinds of memories that should be cherished when we are thinking of Barb. We are unable to attend the celebration of life as we are out of town, but our thoughts will be with you on Saturday.

    Laura and Ian

  11. Barb taught my daughter Raena kindergarten at Elbow Valley School. This was her last year of teaching there before retiring. She was a wonderful teacher and person. My daughter will always hold a piece of her in her heart and so will I. Please find comfort in the fact that she has touched so many lives and influenced so many people and will be remembered by those people for many many years! Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

  12. Barb taught our oldest daughter at Elbow Valley Elementary and gave her such a solid foundation for her education. We also enjoyed seeing Barb at the Calgary Winter Club over the years and she always remembered the girls and was interested to know what they were doing. She has left a legacy with all the children who had the privilege to have her as a teacher. Our thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

  14. I am heartbroken at the loss of Barb. We have been friends for 37 years, albeit long distance since I moved back to Victoria 30 years ago. I’ve so enjoyed her visits out here over the years. She was such a sunny, cheerful presence in my life. I will miss her so much.
