GALLAGHER, Maureen Theresa

October 6, 1951 – July 20, 2012

Maureen T Gallagher of Calgary, formerly of London, England passed away on Friday 20th July 2012 aged 60 years.

Maureen is survived by her loving brother Kieran (London, England) sister Eira (Dublin, Ireland) sisters in laws Sue and Peggy, nephews Timmy, John, James and Danny; nieces Sinead, Joanne and Teresa; aunts, uncles, cousins and extended family in Ireland, England, North America, Canada and Australia and a wide circle of friends.

Maureen is predeceased by her late father John, mother Una and brothers Adrian and Eamonn.

Maureen had been living and working in Calgary for three decades but had always intended to retire back home to Ireland. While in life she did not get the opportunity to realise this particular ambition, Maureen final resting place will indeed be close to where she spent many happy childhood summers in Swinford, Co.Mayo, Ireland.

Another light in the family switched off long before it’s time.

A daughter, sister and aunt, loved too much to ever be forgotten.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Maureen Gallagher, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: (403) 256-9575.

  3. Gretchen Collin :

Please know my heart is with you and your family. Maureen and I worked together here at GR Petrology but had a growing friendship as well. She always had a smile, a laugh and a wonderful story to share with me each time we saw each other. Her life was indeed cut entirely too short. I will miss her dearly with all my heart.
My condolences are with her family.
    Gretchen

To Maureen’s family, We want to let you know how very sorry we were to hear of Maureen’s passing. Although we had lost touch the last few years, we have many fond memories of fun times had together during our time together at the U of C, on our visit to Venezuela, and here in Calgary. May she rest in peace in the place she loved. So sorry not to be able to be there to say good-bye on Thursday. Beth and Rod Haverslew

  7. Fons and Tonie Dekker :

To Maureen’s family. I, Fons, met Maureen for the first time in 1983 in Venezuela when she, as a biostratigrapher, was trying to make sense out of a large collection of crates with geochemical instrumentation, having to set up the geochem lab at INTEVEP in Caracas. I am sure she succeeded but I did not hang around long enough to admire the probably brazen way she went about it. The next time was 23 years later, when we both worked for Geoglobal on projects in India. When I arrived in India, my luggage was delayed and Maureen and I went to pick it up a day later from a local transportation company. After endless discussions with the owner, it came down to a request for a substantial bribe, even though the airline company had paid for everything. Maureen made it very clear to him that we would not pay and so we entered a stalemate. I asked Maureen to get our driver and car to the ramp of the warehouse and with a twinkle in her eyes she dashed of, enjoying the thought that we were going to beat the guy. When the car was in place, I simply grabbed my luggage, jumped in the car and we dashed off. I never heared her laugh so loud.

Maureen was fun to work with and I will certainly miss her mischievous smile.

Our deepest sympathy to all of you.

    Fons and Tonie Dekker

  12. Janet Helton Johnson :

I am deeply sorry to hear about Maureen’s sudden death. I was one of her former roommates when she was studying for her PhD at the University of Calgary. That was decades ago – back in the 1970s! I remember her as a thoughtful, caring person who really loved classical music.

I just heard about her death, and offer my belated, sincere sympathy.

  13. Wendy Lomnes :

I was so surprised and saddened to hear, only recently, of Maureen’s passing nearly 3 years ago. We had been roommates at U of C and had shared a love of classical music. Maureen took me to my first opera and I’ve been a subscriber ever since. We had lost touch in the last 8-10 years but I have many good memories of her.

My belated condolences to her family.
