We are sad to announce the passing of Dr. James Emmet Gallagher at Bow View Manor, Calgary, AB on Friday, June 14, 2013 at the age of 80.
Jim was born in Lamont and lived in Chipman, AB, completing his schooling in Edmonton. He obtained his BEd degree from the University of Alberta, earning his journeyman’s carpenter certificate along the way. He followed this with an MEd degree from U of A and an EdD degree from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Jim taught in Yellowknife, NWT and was Vice-Principal of Sir John Franklin High School there. He later joined the Faculty of Education at the U of A, where he soon became a Full Professor and Head of the Department of Industrial and Vocational Education. Upon his retirement from U of A, he held a position at St. Clair College in Windsor, ON for several years. During his career, Jim travelled the world, engaged in various projects with the Canadian International Development Agency, the International Labour Organization, and other groups. He loved sports, and was an avid curler and golfer.
Jim is survived by his loving companion, Dr. Sharon Robertson; his three children, Shelley Gallagher (Brent Podiluk), Patrick Gallagher, and James Robertson; his former spouse, Marvey Gallagher (née Ridley); his nephews, Doug Sims and Mark Gallagher. He is pre-deceased by his parents, Emmet and Edna Gallagher, and by his siblings, Spencer and Avis.
A Celebration of James Life will be held on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens (24223 Township Road 242 Calgary, AB) (403-240-4032).
