FULLERTON, Dan Jeffrey

October 30, 1953 – September 2, 2012

Dan Fullerton, darling husband of Margaret Fullerton and cherished father of Grace and Luke, passed away suddenly on September 2, 2012 at his home in Calgary.

Dan is survived by his sister Connie Spencer (Dave); brother, Philip Fullerton (Karen); brothers-in-law Bryan (Joanne) and James Hillis (Darlene); and numerous nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his father, Leonard, and his mother, Gladyse.

Dan was born in Eston, Saskatchewan and grew up on a farm near Lacadena. His farming background informed his choice of career as an agricultural economist; he graduated with a Master’s degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1981. International agricultural development became an abiding interest as his work in Vanuatu, Agrodev, the World Bank and various other banks indicate. After his years of travels and having met the love of his life, Margaret, Dan settled into consultancy work in Calgary. Since 2002, Dan worked at Olds College, most recently as Director, Business and International Development where he especially enjoyed his international work and the many friends he made there. Dan was known for his love of projects around the home and at his acreage in Saskatchewan. More than anything, Dan relished cheering and encouraging Grace and Luke through their many school, sporting and music activities. Dan brought a presence to every room that will be sorely missed by his immediate and extended family.

A Celebration of Dan’s Life will be held at Lutheran Church of Our Saviour (8831 Fairmount Drive S.E., Calgary, AB T2H 0Z4) on Sunday, September 9, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Flowers are gratefully declined. Those wishing to make a donation may consider the “Olds College: Educate the Children Fund”, a special project Dan recently initiated that helps educate children in the Dominican Republic by connecting coffee growers there with coffee lovers in Canada. To donate and learn more about this project contact: Karen Viney: 403-556-4687 at Olds College (4500 – 50th Street, Olds, Alberta, T4H 1R6) or visit: Olds College

Condolence Messages

  1. Susan Buchanan :

    Margie, Grace and Luke:

I was a colleague of Dan’s when he worked for Agrodev in Ottawa during the 1980’s. He was such a gentleman, sweet and kind of shy. We were all delighted to hear that he had met his soul-mate in Margie, since as an older female, I considered him to be a “keeper” to the right lucky woman.

With fond remembrances and deepest sympathy on the loss of Dan.

    Sincerely
    Susan Buchanan

  2. Lisa and Doug Davis :

    Dear Margie,
We were shocked and devastated to hear of Dan’s passing. I can only imagine your sorrow at losing Dan so early.

Lorna called me Tuesday morning to tell me that we had lost Dan; I still find it so hard to believe. I will miss his impish grin and wicked sense of humor. His comraderie made working at AVAC a fun experience!

Although we haven’t seen each other much since we moved back from Toronto, Dan and I would speak every few months. Always it seemed like no time had passed, and always we promised to get together. Out of all the people I have met and worked with in my life, Dan is one of only a handful of people I keep in regular contact with. I loved his sense of humor, his dry wit, his ability to take a frustrating situation and make fun of it. He is one of those special people who made you feel better after speaking to him.

There are certain things that always make me think of Dan – Vanuatu (surprisingly this name comes up more than you would think!), World Bank, shirts with pockets filled with pens and notepads…!

You may know that we spoke this summer when I called to ask his advice on helping me create science curriculum for a new course we are offering. And as always, he had some good (and funny)suggestions to help me.

Doug and I will be at the funeral. However, I want you to know how highly we think of Dan, that we loved him, that he made us laugh, that we appreciate having known him. Also, to know that our hearts break for you, Grace, and Luke. Know that we think of your family often, and that Dan was loved and appreciated by many.

    Love,
    Doug and Lisa Davis

  10. Margie,

I worked with Dan at Agrodev back in the day when we were long on attitude and enthusiasm and pretty short on the nuts and bolts of how to be good consultants. Of course, this did not escape Dan’s attention! With a twinkle in his eye he would skewer the pompous with rapier-like precision while marvelling at the absurdities of life as an internaitonal development consultant.

We were born in the same year and were both economists; still, what made us close was that wicked sense of humour of his. When last we spoke about 6 months ago, and for the first time in too long, it felt like we were taking up right where we had left off our last conversation. I shall miss his wise witty observations on life so very much.

Please accept my deepest and heartfelt sympathies for you and your children. Canada is a poorer place today for Dan’s passing.

  15. I worked with Dan for ten years at Olds College and although I’ve never met you I feel like I know the Fullertons well. Dan spoke so often and lovingly about his family – Margie, Grace, and Luke. When we worked together, almost every time we shared lunch or supper in Olds or on the road, there would be a call or two home to give advice on homeweork or enquire about the next soccer game (and then a comment about how remakable they are!).

Dan meant more to many of us than most people would imagine. There are few people that I have known that had a grasp of the ‘big picture’ and also the ability to communicate a vision to the rest of us – all with such a positive outlook and boundless enthusiasm. Dan brooked no complaining, if there was a problem, he would find out what it was and deal with it – I saw him in action on that front many times – he was a leader that led by example and vision and had many successes. But it is the personal time that I will miss the most – working lunches and after work suppers at BP’s, reminiscing about the days in Saskatchewan and then turning to the newest development project (there was always at least one in the pipeline). He gave everyone such a boost and reason to get involved. I will miss that the most.

    Sincerest sympathy,

I want to offer my heartfelt condolences on the passing of Dan. He and I were friends from the U. of S. Margaret, I believe you and I met in Vancouver in 1989 when Dan picked me up at the airport? Lynne and I fondly recalled the Christmas that we had Dan over to our Vancouver apartment in 1979. I was taking my M.Sc. and Dan had just moved out there and none of us went back home. He was always very philosophical about his health. Lots of fond memories!

    Take care and God bless!

  29. Richard Appleby :

I came to know Dan in 1974 when we where both at the U of S, Dan in Ag Sciences and I in Vocational Ag. I purchased his aging 67′ Chevelle as he had just acquired a 70′ Corvette. Our time together was brief then but I knew he was a person of integrity and 14 years later I sent a cheque to his home in Ottawa for that Corvette and he liked the offer and so he cashed it. Few words had been involved at that point and it was that simple. I never lost a minutes sleep over sending that cheque without any safe guards.
People of Dan’s character are not often found. Dan will be forever remembered for that.

  30. Not sure if you will remember me. After Dan and I graduated from U. of S. college we sort of lost touch , until one great day he drove into the farm yard and announced we were neighbours! You folks had purchased the saskatchewan acreage and Dan was so tickled to bring Grace and Luke out to visit. Building the “shop” bunk house, shooting gophers etc. I was sad when he visited this spring with news the acreage was sold. I was shocked today when I learned of his passing.
My deepest condolences, he was a great individual.

  32. I just found out this morning that Dan had passed away a few months ago and wanted to send my condolences. Dan played a signifificant role in my professional career when we worked together trying to get Foodview going in the late 1990s. His boundless energy and continual curiosity was something i will never forget. Margie, I dont believe that we ever met, but I feel like I know you because Dan and I spent many hours during our brainstorming sessions talking about those things that were most important and you and the children were always at the top of his list. Please accept my sincere condolences. Bob
