Friedt, Sister Justine

Sister Justine Friedt died suddenly and peacefully at the Foothills Medical Centre on Monday, May 19, 2008 at the age of 90 years. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of St. Louis in Levi PQ in 1939, professed her religious vows in 1942, and returned to Western Canada to begin her ministry as a homemaker in boarding schools and convents. Sr. Justine served diligently and generously in Swift Current, Moose Jaw, Wilcox, Radville SK, Burnaby BC, Medicine Hat, and Calgary AB until 1992 at which time she took up permanent residence at St. John’s Senior Care Home in Calgary. Sr. Justine will be remembered for her deep faith, creativity, cooking skills, and beautiful handicrafts. Her love for life was obvious in her love for children, her skill in nurturing plants and flowers, and the beautiful cakes and delicious baking that she generously shared with family and friends. In this age of environmental concern she recycled hundreds of greeting cards, collecting and remodelling them for re-gifting. In the early years of her retirement Justine often helped families by providing child care and helping with homemaking. When Elizabeth House was established Sr. Justine became their unofficial fund raiser, selling crafts, cards, and knitting at various Church socials and craft sales. Most recently she “adopted” the women and men served at CUPS to be recipients of her prayerfully knitted toques and scarves. Justine will be lovingly remembered by the members of her religious community, her sister Josie Gronning, her brother Lee (Marguerite) Friedt and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces and the many children she cared for who lovingly call her “Grandma Justine.” Sister Justine (Regina) was predeceased by her parents Ralph and Justina Friedt, her brother Joseph, and her sisters Barbara (John) Quinlan and Kay (Ted) Clarkson. The Sisters of Charity of St. Louis offer sincere and deep gratitude to the staff at St. John’s Senior Care Home for the attentive and compassionate care they gave to Justine throughout the past years.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at St. John’s Senior Care Home Chapel (409 – 10A Street NW) Thursday, May 22, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church (640 – 19 Avenue NW) on Friday, May 23, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. Graveside service will follow in St. Joseph’s Section, Queen’s Park Cemetery.
