With sadness we announce the passing of our beloved husband, son and friend, Fred Herfort on Monday, September 1, 2014 at the age of 65 years. Fred will lovingly remembered by his wife, June Louise Herfort, of forty-two years.

Born in Braunschweig, Germany on July 19, 1949, Fred immigrated to Canada. He and June were married on July 15, 1972.

Fred graduated from the University of Calgary with his Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Science degrees. He was employed with AGT Communications as a consultant and a scientific researcher at the U of C. Fred attended North Calgary Community Church (NCCC). He loved to travel, especially New York City, which he visited three times. Fred was a renaissance man – an artist, photographer, astronomer, stamp collector, coin collector, and above all else, a devoted husband and son. His biggest passion was astronomy.

For forty-two years, Fred was a member of the Louise Lucas, Mother of the CCF, family. 3. I was associated with Fred when I did my post-doctoral work in the lab of Prof. Gordon Dixon between 1986-1988. He was great friend, colleague and most of all a very caring person. I remember him organizing a trip during the annual retreat in 1986 when he displayed his astronomical skills by demonstrating a view of Jupiter and its moons. That was an awesome experience. As an experimentalist I found him to very meticulous and highly organized. Even after leaving Calgary, I often remembered him for his friendly caring nature. His memory lives on. Condolences are a bit belated as I just happened to check about him on google.
