    Dear Joyce and Christine,
    My thoughts are with you.

    I have known your family for a very short time and in that short time I have come to know that it has a certain uniqueness..a unquiness like no other. Don was indeed a gentle man with evident ‘love’ for his family.

    Don did have a rough road in the last few months…But his strength and eagerness to fight for his life was ever evident…He fought for his life with his ever dedicated wife..Joyce..who struggled every step of the way with her beloved Don…

    They knew each other so well…I know Don will continue to look over his precious wife and keep her safe.

    Joyce you have amazing strength..

    May Don rest now and Rest in Peace..

  18. Jim Campbell :

    Dear Joyce and Christine,
    I was shocked and saddened to learn of Don’s passing. I first knew him through Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Calgary and the Bowl for Kids event and then carried on working with him when I was at the Nature Conservancy of Canada. We have seen each other occasionally downtown since I took on my current role as Manager Western Canada Office for Queen’s University but had not connected recently and I can only surmise that it was because of illness.

    Don was truly a kind and thoughtful man and an unsung hero. His support of Big Brothers and Big Sisters was sincere and significant. I will always appreciate his great efforts on behalf of disadvantaged children who he would never know.

    In the months and years ahead I trust that you will be able to draw on many warm memories of him and the support of your family and friends. Our world is that much less for his passing but we are that much better for having known him.

    Sincerely,

    Jim Campbell

  26. Marilyn Sundermann :

    I hope this little poem gives you some comfort, Joyce and Christine. Don once mentionned sailing with friends in Toronto. Rest in peace, Don.

    “I am standing upon the seashore.
    A ship at my side spreads her white
    sails to the morning breeze and starts
    for the blue ocean.

    She is an object of beauty and strength.
    I stand and watch her until at length
    she hangs like a speck of white cloud
    just where the sea and sky come
    to mingle with each other.

    Then, someone at my side says;
    “There, she is gone!”

    “Gone where?”
    Gone from my sight. That is all.
    She is just as large in mast and hull
    and spar as she was when she left my side
    and she is just as able to bear her
    load of living freight to her destined port.
    Her diminished size is in me, not in her.

    And just at the moment when someone
    at my side says, “There, she is gone!”
    There are other eyes watching her coming,
    and other voices ready to take up the glad
    shout;
    “Here she comes!”
    And that is dying.”

    Dear Joyce and Christine;

    I was quite saddened to learn of Don’s passing recently. I had taught Don software courses at U of C’s Continuing Education many years ago and we remained good friends since then. Always with a smile and good laugh, I appreciated his knowledge both as a designer and as a friend. Judging from the comments on this site, Don was blessed with many friends.

    My heartfelt sympathies and support to you both in your moment of sorrow and loss.

    My cousin Donny was a role model for me growing up. He took an interest in included me with his friends in many activities. Don taught me to swim, to drive a boat, and took me hiking and fishing at Clear, and Kashe lakes. Eventually Donny led me into engineering.

    I looked forward to seeing Don whenever he and Joyce returned to Toronto from Africa, BC, or wherever their adventures had taken them, always together.
