FRAZER, Jocelyn Anne

November 13, 1962 – Edmonton, Alberta
April 30, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

The dawning light of Monday, April 30, 2018 witnessed the passing of Jocelyn Anne Frazer under the comfort and care of her family and friends in her own home. While cancer may have taken her body, it could not overwhelm her joy of life, love, compassion, grace, and determination – all of which will endure in those whose lives she touched.

Jocelyn was an amazing woman, though gracefully embarrassed by any praise or discussions that focused on her or her accomplishments – whether personal or professional – so being brief is best, lest she find a way to cut this short (which she probably could). After graduating from the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Law in 1988 and being admitted the bar, she stepped away from an offered permanent position to practice law from home. This afforded her the opportunity to raise her four daughters, who became her four best friends. The mix of law and motherhood under the same roof posed challenges, but Jocelyn faced them all with her trademark determination and sense of humor. Jocelyn did eventually leave private practice and took on the role of Practice Advisor and Equity Ombudsperson for the Law Society of Alberta, where she was a determined, patient, and compassionate advocate for equity, diversity, and access to justice. Jocelyn was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in December 2015, and took this in stride with the same resilience, focus, hope, and concern for others that she brought to everything she did.

To always move forward, look after themselves, and look after each other was Jocelyn’s greatest wish for those so precious to her. She is greatly missed by her high school debating partner, sweetheart and husband of thirty-five years, Geoff; her amazing daughters, Stephanie, Sydney, Sarah, and Carley; her daughters’ fiancées, Glenn Eberth, Craig Alport, and Justin Dube; mother Helen Hume; adored stepfather Don Hume; her brother Scott and his family; and all her dear cousins, in-laws and their families.

A Celebration of Jocelyn’s Life will be celebrated at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB) on Friday, May 11, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation’s Ride To Conquer Cancer (to either the Accenture Brainiacs team or any other participant or team), Suite 120, 707 7th Avenue SW, Calgary AB T2P 3H6 Telephone: 1-888-624-2453, http://ride.conquercancer.ca/alberta

In living memory of Jocelyn Frazer, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

She was very good at her work and immensely proud of you. I can only offer my condolences.

I am very sorry to hear of Jocelyn’s passing. As an articling student considering a move from Calgary to rural Alberta, Jocelyn was the only contact that I could think of to confide in regarding my indecision. She graciously offered to meet with me in person and help weigh the pros and cons of my options. The decision to move to rural Alberta to practice law has had a deep and lasting impact on my life, and I am indebted to Jocelyn for her willingness to help me organize my thoughts. I could not agree more with Mr. Thompson’s comments that she helped provide better legal services to the public.

    To her family:

I was involved with the CBA and LSA commitees for many years from 2001 to 2011 and am a practicing lawyer. Over those years I had many, many occasions to speak to Jocelyn both on a professional and informal basis. She was a wonderful person first and foremost. I always enjoyed our conversations and she always said something that was enlightening. Her practical common sense approach to often complex factual situations was always well thought through and honest and her sense of humility was simply refreshing given the nature of our profession.

Her smile and demeanour was always a comfort.

I was so sad to hear the passing of Jocelyn. She was an amazing resource when I was a young lawyer and was instrumental in helping me set up a practice shortly after being called to the bar. At the time, the economy was uncertain, jobs were few, and I was very pregnant. She encouraged me to start my own practice and even came to my house to meet with me to help get me started. Her belief in me that I could go forward on my own (with a new baby under my arm) was encouraging, and she made herself available to ask her many questions about real estate, practice management and governance. I will always remember some key advice she gave to me – be a great lawyer, but also be a great business person, because lawyers are not always both. This stuck with me and continues to be something I think about nine years later as I continue to grow my practice and be both a lawyer and a business woman. I am eternally grateful for her support, kindness and good advice. Jocelyn’s passing is a loss to many, including the Alberta bar. I wish her family peace in this difficult time and hope they know that she leaves a legacy.

  60. Global Lawyers of Canada :

We recently learned that Jocelyn Frazer, Practice Advisor and Equity Ombudsman (on leave) of the Law Society of Alberta, has passed away.

Our current Director and Co-founder Agnes BieIecki, has made the following statement: “I knew Jocelyn personally and I will always be grateful for her commitment to representing Internationally Trained Lawyers (ITLs) in the legal community in Alberta. For many years she worked tirelessly in the legal community to raise awareness of the challenges which ITLs face in getting re-qualified to practice law in Alberta. She was a dedicated and passionate advocate of the ITLs community.

When Daniel Lo and I came up with the idea of creating Global Lawyers of Canada (GLC), we reached out first to Jocelyn and Cori Ghitter. Jocelyn and Cori were our first mentors and supported GLC greatly by opening many doors for us in the legal community. Since the beginning, Jocelyn and Cori were cheering GLC on in anything we did. In 2015, Jocelyn attended the GLC launch event, together with Cori, where they represented the Law Society of Alberta, showing their support for us. Jocelyn’s attendance just confirmed her undeniable dedication and commitment to working on behalf of disadvantaged groups in the legal community.

She had always time, patience and empathy for ITLs. She will be missed greatly.”

To Jocelyn’s Husband, Children and Family: I met Jocelyn in February 2016, as I was about to take the first steps towards setting up my solo law practice. Her advice was invaluable. She was warm, caring and effusive. She did not have any airs and I felt comfortable discussing all aspects of my proposed business, law practice in Alberta and life generally. After setting up, she called me every two weeks for more than 4 months, just to make sure that I was coping well. She was the reason I set up without any fears and she was instrumental to what STANLEY LAW had become today. May God, who knows it all, grant all of you the strength, peace and fortitude you all need at this time and always. I am very sorry to see the news of Jocelyn’s passing. Though I dealt with her as a practice advisor, and therefore only knew her by telephone, I greatly admired her. I always knew that her attention to detail, combined with her empathy would steer me in the right direction. I also talked to her when I first started my own solo practice in 2009, and she had a wealth of knowledge. I also enjoyed the Solonet service that she set up so that small size firms and solo practitioners could find support – a tough thing to manage otherwise! She went the extra mile to help us. No one can fill her place, and she left a legacy in Alberta through these effects. My condolences go out to her family and I wish the family all the best.
