FRASER, Marion Fern

January 17, 1933 – Tilbury East Township, ON
May 31, 2013 – Calgary, AB

Marion Fern Fraser of Calgary passed away suddenly on Friday, May 31, 2013 at the age of 80 years. We will miss her twinkling baby blue eyes, sense of humor, determination, passion, and energy.

Marion is survived by her two treasured children, Neil Robert Innes Fraser (Margot) and Tracy Lynn Innes Holman, and her beloved grandchildren, Sophie, Liam, Skylar, and Spencer. She will be missed by her sister Ruth Ellen Leitch of Sarnia, ON, her brother-in-law Charles Gregor Innes Fraser (Nadine) of Calgary, AB, and her sister-in-law Isabel Ansley (Dr. Ralph) of Manly, Australia, as well as numerous nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her husband of thirty-five years Robert (Bob) Fraser whom she was looking forward to seeing in heaven.

Marion was born on January 17, 1933 in Tilbury, Ontario. She graduated from Public General Hospital in Chatham, Ontario in 1954 at the top of her nursing class. She joined TransCanada Airlines as a flight attendant in 1956. After she married Bob in 1961, she began her nursing career at Toronto Western Hospital surgical unit. When they moved to Halifax, Marion was in charge of a surgical outpatient clinic at Victoria General Hospital, and had her first child whom she and Bob nicknamed “Tiger”. The family moved to London in 1966 for a year and a daughter, Tracy, followed. In 1967, they returned to Toronto and Marion worked relief at both the Toronto Western and Mississauga Hospitals before the family decided to move west to Calgary in December 1968. In March 1969, Marion started working at Rockyview Hospital with pediatrics, surgical and medical patients. She was well respected by her patients, her peers, and the medical community. She would finish her career at Rockyview in 2000 – thirty-two years later. Although Marion loved her nursing career, nothing gave her more satisfaction and pride than her family. In her younger years Marion was active in the legion, golfing, bicycling, and babysitting her grandkids. As the years progressed, she found joy in reading, flowers, visiting with friends, and theater.

I am so sorry to hear of Marion’s passing. I worked with her on 1 South at the Rockyview when I returned to nursing after time off with my young family. I was so relieved when your mom was on the same shift as me as she was always there when needed to mentor and advise. She spoke of her family often and with great affection. I’m sure you have many happy memories to comfort you at this sad time.

    Dear Tracey, Innes and families,
I was very sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. I had such a good visit with her a year ago. Marion was special to me. She walked me to the one room country school when I started in grade one. I have always felt close to her. She was a kind and compassionate cousin, nurse and friend. I know you will all miss her dearly,
Ruth Ellen told me about the fitting memorial you had to honour your mom. It sounded like a lovely service. Was thinking of you at the time and wishing I could have been with you.
    Cousin Margaret
