FOONG, Choi Har

October 28, 1925 – January 2, 2013

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our mother, Choi Har Foong (also called May Fong and Lee), on January 2nd, 2013 in Arcadia, CA. She was born in Taishan, Guangdong, China. She was a poor country girl, who had to walk miles to gather firewood for heat and dinner. She lost her sister and the opportunity for an education because of World War II.

In 1947, she married Lin Art Look in Hong Kong and immigrated to the USA. They raised three children in the back of their laundry in Rogers Park, IL. The family moved to their first house in Skokie, IL in 1957. She was widowed in 1963, and left alone to support mother, children, and adopted brother.

In 1972, she married Douglas Foong. With their only son, they moved to Calgary, AB in 1977. In 1978, the family moved to Airdrie, AB to open a fast food burger restaurant. Soon afterwards, the restaurant was converted to a Chinese restaurant, the Airdrie Inn. After the restaurant was sold in the 80’s, she remained content on being a housewife. In 1990, they moved to Calgary. She was widowed, again, in 1992, and has always remained independently strong.

She had a great love of family, friends, walking, gardening, and her Calgary Flames. She enjoyed traveling, taking pictures, and trying new foods; but she always remained loyal to her rice.

She is survived by brother Jerry, sister-in-law, Ann; sons, Harvey, John, and Gabriel; daughter, Mary; daughter-in-law, Gina; son-in-law, Mark; grandchildren Eric, Reyna, Christopher, Robert, Justin, Nora, David; and great-grand-daughter Allison. She is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Thursday, January 10, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Friday, January 11, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Condolences may be forwarded through
