FLEMING, Wayne Coach / Flemmer

July 6, 1950 – March 25, 2013

When diagnosed with brain cancer (GBM) March 31, 2011, Wayne’s response was “we’ll fight this”; and he did, living the words he so strongly believed, “never give up”. Wayne’s battle ended peacefully at home in the comfort of family.

Wayne’s extensive hockey resume originated in Winnipeg at CPHS and further developed at the University of Manitoba where, for over a decade, he was an integral part of the men’s ice hockey team, as a player, and then coach. His career behind the bench spanned university, national, international and NHL levels for over 3 decades, with his proudest achievement being an Olympic gold in 2002 to accompany the silver from 1992.

While hockey was Wayne’s career and passion, family was his pride and joy. The world was never too big for him to plan family holidays and celebrations, especially summers in BC and Christmases in Switzerland. He will be so sadly missed by his wife, Carolyn; children, Angie (Ulf), Allie (Tony), Jarett (Brendene), Jordan (Arden); grandchildren Yannek, Kiara, Mikela, Kian, Ava, Jacob, Josh; parents Jake & Mary; sister, Jennifer; the Bell family; extended family; friends and colleagues near and far.

A celebration of Wayne’s life will be held in July, with details to be announced at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In his honor, the Wayne Fleming Legacy Athletic Scholarship has been established at the University of Manitoba. On-line gifts may be made at: umanitoba.ca/giving. Cheques can be made payable to the University of Manitoba and mailed to Donor Relations, Room 179 Extended Education Winnipeg, MB R3T 2N2.

Thank you for the outpouring of love and support; we are forever grateful.

In living memory of Wayne Fleming, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  1. Dean Ehrmantraut :

Carolyn and family, My sincere condolences to you and your family. A few years ago when Wayne was with the Flames. He saw me and my boys watching a pre-game morning skate. After he was finished he came into the stands behind the bench to visit for an extended period. That gesture meant a lot to me and made an impression on a 8 and 10 year old at the time.
    Take care, Dean Ehrmantraut

Sincerest sympathies to Wayne’s family. My son and I met Wayne at a Senators/Flyers game in Ottawa in Feb/06. We travelled from Manitoba to see the Flyers play as my son’s favourite player, Peter Forsberg, was playing with the Flyers at the time. During the pre-game skate, Wayne noticed the sign we had made and walked over to chat with us. He told us Forsberg was hurt and didn’t make the trip. He asked us for our address and told us he would send my son somthing when he had time after the Olympics. True to form, after the Olympics, a package came in the mail from Wayne with a Flyers calendar signed by Peter Forsberg. He was a first rate class act and his kind gesture will never be forgotten. Rest in peace Wayne!

It is with such sorrow that I read of Wayne’s passing. I was searching our son’s Condolences, (Garry’s youngest son, Dennis) who passed away March 17th suddenly at 46 years old, when I recognized Wayne. What a shock though I know he had some health issues. We went home for the funeral with the family but returned to Yuma for another month for r’n’r. Our hearts go out to you, Carolyn and family, and know the hurt you feel. We are at a loss tht they took Dennis at such an early age. He was a gem. Our thoughts and love to all.

  27. My thoughts and prayers are with the Fleming family. I did not know Wayne as a coach, but I briefly got to know a man who’s world was his family, and who’s heart was full of compassion for others. I still appreciate how in ’98 Wayne reached out to my 11 year old nephew who was in children’s hospital in Vancouver with cancer. Wayne brought him to an NHL practice so he so he could forget about the terrible disease he was fighting. Thank you and may God grant you eternal rest.

  31. My condolences go out to the entire Fleming family on Wayne’s passing. My family (Blisner’s) have known Wayne and the Fleming family for many years. I worked for Wayne at the C.P.H.S. Pro Shop at Century Arena when I was 14. Then at the U of M hockey camps when Wayne was the coach. I played for Wayne my first year with the Bisons (1989). Wayne was a great coach (just like his dad!). He told you straight up what your role on the team was going to be. I have great memories of that year and Wayne was a big reason for that!

    Carolyn and family

Our thoughts goes to you Carolyn and your lovely family. Wayne is the person in ice hockey that meant the most to me and his way of leading a team has been a great inspiration for me as I now coach. He was a warm and emotional person with a big hockey heart, that’s how I remember him. It was great to see you at the Globe in Stockholm three years ago during LG games, Wayne was there and gave a talk and I got the opportunity to sit and talk with you at the dinner afterwards, what a nice time it was for me. When we talked about Leksand, he was teary-eyed and I know Leksand meant a lot to all your family. I also know that you as a family meant a lot to this small community, Wayne put big impression as a coach but also you as a family were very well-liked by many people.
    Sincerely, Niklas & Carol

Carolyn: I’m not sure if you remember me but we nursed together at the Victoria Hospital in Winnipeg…many many years ago. 42. Ted Bigelow :

It was very sad to hear the final buzzer go for Wayne. We went to university together and worked making sport in Manitoba a great place to be! Wayne was always the same and his smile and sense of humour always made the process way more fun. I will never forget the day many years ago when he walked in my office and announced he wanted to become an NHL coach! Michel Jordan said “you miss 100% of the shots you don`t take” and I was not going to rain on Wayne`s parade that day. Watching him follow his path up through the system was always motivating to me because how steady and persistent he worked. Sometimes he shared his updates in a visit, email or phone call. One of my lump in the throat Olympic moments was watching him play a key role at the Olympics and seeing that same smile on his face as he guided our hockey teams to success. The world is a better place thanks to Wayne Flemming! Keep your stick on the ice and head on a swivel.
