FISK, Mary

June 7, 1961 – Wadena, SK
June 19, 2013 – Calgary, AB

Mary was born on June 7, 1961 in Wadena, SK to Joe and Annie Zarowny. Being the youngest girl out of four brothers and three sisters Mary was special. Growing up with such a large family, her house was always filled with family friends and neighbors. Everyone was always welcome at the Zarowny’s. From this, Mary learned the importance of family and friends.
Upon completion of school Mary moved to Saskatoon to further her formal education. Tears were shed as we would watch her wave from the bus as it drove past the farm. Mary made the best of the big city life and was sure to return home as often as she could. We counted the days until she came home for holidays. It wasn’t Christmas until Mary came home.
After finishing her education she moved to Calgary. At the age of 20 she started with the University of Calgary where she worked her entire life. Most of this time was spent in the Faculty of Graduate Studies until she made a recent career change to IT. During this time she made lifetime friends whose support and love will never be forgot.
On July 27, 1991 Mary married Dave Fisk of Calgary. Between traveling to far off lands and spending summers in their trailer in Sundre, Mary and Dave lived life to its fullest. Mary and Dave went their separate ways in 2007.
Mary’s greatest joys were her puppies. She loved taking them for walks. The endless photos and stories we have will live on forever. Casey, Heidi, Rascal and Angel – you were her kids and she will always love you. Mary always believed that when dogs pass over they cross Rainbow Bridge. She too has now made that journey.
Mary dedication and commitment to life was inspiring. Daughter, sister, aunty and best friend are just some of the words used to describe such a wonderful person. Her smile and laugh would light up a room. Through all of her life’s challenges, she took each one day by day.
After an almost 2 year battle with cancer we had to say goodbye to Mary on June 19, 2013, Waiting for her on the other side is her Father, Joe Zarowny and Brother-in-law Bill Townend. She leaves behind her Mother, Anne Zarowny, siblings and their spouses, nieces and nephews and friends.
Today we don’t say goodbye. Because Mary your everlasting spirit will always be with us.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

I worked closely with Mary in Graduate Studies at the U of C. I’ll always remember her gutteral laugh; her compassion for others; her sense of humour and way of teasing. She had a magical way of making people feel special, and she made me feel that way. Hug to her whole family. Nikki Croft

Mary was the “little sister” I never had, and she is as dear to me as family. Our childhood friendship holds so many special memories of time spent together back home in the Saskatchewan sunshine or snow, it didn’t matter, we had fun always. The Zarowny family is like true “family” to us Antonios’ and my heart is heavy with sadness for the loss of your loved one and for the loss of my dear, sweet friend. Mary was a “gift” to us all and I am blessed to have known her and call her my ‘friend’. You are all in my prayers in this time of sorrow.

To Mary’s family: I want you to know how much Mary was loved by all who worked with her. She wasn’t just a co-worker, she became a friend to all she worked with. It is with deep sorrow that I bid Mary good-bye, for she was very special to me. Mary was very good at her job and we could always depend on her to do things right; but she was much more than that – she built a warm relationship with each person she worked with, even those of us who were on another campus and communicated with her mainly by phone. I know she cares deeply about all the folks she’s left behind and is eagerly waiting to see us again. I look forward to seeing her warm smile and hearing her cheery voice again.

I am still trying to “take in” the passing of this beautiful person….Mary! She put so many people first, before herself, and, I will never forget her. My daughter, Carrie, once worked with Mary. Years and years later, each time I would run into Mary…her first words [after asking about me], were always “and how is Carrie doing?, Please tell her I think of her often.” That was Mary, she always thought of everyone before herself. My heart breaks to know she is gone. Condolences to her family on the loss of a special lady. Marion Hillier [retired, GPA/Graduate Program in Communication Studies/UofC.

  32. Dear Auntie Annie and Family, my thoughts and prayers go out to all of you. I am not surprised at the wonderful comments made about Mary. Mary was always the same – happy, bubbly, smiling and always finding something good to say. I have fond memories of her on the farm and when she lived in Saskatoon with Diane. I will cherish my memory of her forever. I remember giving her a ride back to Saskatoon once and how she cried when she had to say good bye to Uncle Joe – family was very important to her. I just learned of Mary’s passing and what a shock. I worked with Mary for many years when she was in Graduate Studies and I was in Kinesiology.
