FISH, John Alan

July 11, 1941 – December 25, 2013

The Fish family announce the passing of Mr. John Alan Fish on December 25, 2013 in Calgary, AB.

John was born in Thunder Bay, ON on July 11, 1941, the youngest son of Melba and Horace Fish.  He grew up in a family of five with two older brothers; Arthur and Edward Fish.  As a family, they grew up with a sense of togetherness, and developed a love of what Northern Ontario has to offer; the outdoors, fishing, and enjoying summers at their cottage.  John attended both Lakeview and Fort William Collegiate high schools.  He continued his post secondary education at Lakehead Teachers College and Lakehead University.

John married Mary Anne (Exley) on December 27, 1965 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Thunder Bay, ON.  Together they raised four children; two daughters (Christine and Lesley) and two sons (Jonathan and Matthew).

John became a much adored teacher for over thirty years in the Lakehead Board of Education and his teaching and coaching legacy continues to be discussed amongst his former students.  He proved that great teaching is really about dedication in his classroom, and how important it was to value each person in it.

John raised his own children with the same values and commitment to family. He could be counted on to be up for either early morning hockey games, soccer practices, gymnastics or ski races. He enjoyed curling and family ski holidays.  However, his most favourite passion was spending his summers in the cottage community of Amethyst Beach with his family and friends.  In fact, on some days he could be seen taking over the boys’ paper routes.

John is survived by his wife Mary Anne and children Lesley Lukawy (Bill), Jonathan (Michelle) and Matthew (Emilie). He enjoyed living near his grandchildren Danica and Exley Fish after he and Mary Anne  moved to Calgary in 2006.  John was predeceased by his daughter Christine; his parents Melba and Horace Fish; his brothers Arthur and Edward Fish; and Mary Anne’s parents Mary and Doug Exley.

Cremation has taken place and interment will take place at a later date.  A Memorial Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Crowfoot Chapel (82 Crowfoot Circle N.W.) on Friday, January 3, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. A celebration of life will be held in Thunder Bay, ON, in the summer (date TBD).  Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.  In lieu of flowers/gifts, donations can be made to The Children’s Wish Foundation at http://www.childrenswish.ca/en-ab/get_involved/donate

In living memory of John Fish, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot Chapel, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. Telephone: (403) 241-0044.

    Mary Anne and family:
Our heartfelt condolences are extended to you all on John’s death. The picture is so the memory we have of John. Michelle, Meredith and Willy so enjoyed John as a teacher; Bill recalls many memories of attending school with John and in later years working on the ski hill when Willy, Jonathan and Matthew skied. We remember the summer we rented the cottage beside the Fish family at Amethyst.
Memories are so precious and we know a lot of the young people whose lives were impacted by having John as their educator, they will remember as someone who had their interests in the forefront.
We know John will be greatly missed by you all!

We are so sorry to hear of John’s passing. I have fond memories of teaching with John at Agnew. The picture in the newspaper is exactly as I remember John. I can still picture him trudging down Churchill Drive to school each morning.
My son had the good fortune to be in John’s Grade 8 class. Although more than 20 years have passed, Scott still has fond memories of that year and I know Mr. Fish was his favourite elementary school teacher.
We know John has had health issues for the past several years. May he rest in peace.

  41. I was very sadden to hear of Mr Fishs passing.
I first meet Mr Fish in 1987 as my grade 8 teacher. He was great. I was chatty. One thing I learned it that I should always listen to my teacher OR he would talk to me above the rim of his glasses (and that ment business)
Mr Fish was always approachable, kind, honest, funny and I called him “Me-der Feeeeee-ish”. I learnt ALOT from him. I wish you are smiling like I am right now…….thinking about walking into my grade 8 class @ Agnew and seeing him in his green suit 🙂
