Jan Ferensowicz, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at the age of 94 years.
He was born in Eastern Poland which succumbed to Soviet occupation in 1939. Dad was exiled to Siberia’s labour camps before joining the Polish army with the allied forces under General Anders and the Polish Second Corps in the British 8th Army in 1942. His military trek took him through the Middle East and ultimately to the Battles of Monte Cassino, and Ancona, and Rome, as part of the Italian campaign.Dad was a highly decorated soldier. He immigrated to Canada in 1949 to Southern Alberta, where he worked in the coal mines. He moved to Calgary in the early1950’s and joined the Energy Resources Conservation Board as a core handler. He was an active participant in Polish communities around Alberta, a founding member of the Polish Combatants Branch No. 18, a member of the Polish Canadian Congress and a representative of the Polish Government in Exile. Dad was actively involved in the building of Our Lady Queen of Peace Polish Catholic Parish. Dad’s generation understood the meaning of God, Honour and Country. He loved his newspapers, books and dogs.
Jan is survived by his son Paul (Joanna), granddaughter Anna, daughter Maria, and son Andrew. He was predeceased by his dear wife Janina in 1993, brother Jozef, sisters Antonia and Janina.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady Queen of Peace Polish Catholic Church (2111 Uxbridge Drive N.W.) on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. Graveside Service at Queen’s Park Cemetery, Thursday March 6, 2014 at 10:30a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
