FENWICK, Frederick Lorne

August 11, 1925 – Winnipeg, MB
May 23, 2013 – Calgary, AB

Fred L. Fenwick, much beloved husband of Mary Jeannette Fenwick (Elias) passed away peacefully on Thursday May 23, 2013 at the age of 87. Fred and Mary were united in 62 years of loving marriage, and were together at his passing.

Fred grew up in Calgary, graduated in 1943 from Central High School (then Central Collegiate Institute) and served with the RCAF in WWII. After the war, Fred attended at the University of Alberta, graduating in 1951 with a degree in civil engineering. Fred was an accomplished civil engineer, working his entire professional career with the Mannix (Loram) group of companies. He was justifiably proud of his career and his many fine colleagues with whom he built the highways, dams, bridges and railroads that gave us our modern West.

Active in the community, Fred gave back as a director of many foundations and charities including the Calgary Foundation. He served as the President of the Carthy Foundation during the years that the Foundation installed the magnificent Carthy organ at the Jack Singer Hall. In memory of that time, the Loram Group created a music scholarship in Fred’s name at the University of Calgary upon his retirement.

Fred was an unrepentant home body and shared his happy home with family, friends, business colleagues and strays. Mary had to learn to make a dinner for twelve in the blink of an eye but their home was always a haven of friendship and peace.

Fred was predeceased by his sister Lois Colwell (Fenwick) and her husband Howard Colwell, and is survived by his wife Mary, three children, Shauna, Fred, and Barb and four grandchildren, Eric Fenwick, Lauren Fenwick, Brianna Bock and Janelle Bock.

A celebration of Fred’s life will be held at the Church of the Good Shepherd (Anglican), 408 – 38 Street S.W., Calgary on Friday May, 31, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Southern Alberta chapter of the Kidney Foundation of Canada or the charity of your choice.

In living memory of Fred Fenwick, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

Condolence Messages

  1. Skye (Elsie) McTavish :

    I will always remember Uncle Fred for his kindness. Visits to Aunt Mary and Uncle Fred’s home were always fun. Uncle Fred would always make sure the small children were entertained. He took the time to really visit with children. He listened. You never felt small or invisible when you were there.

    Uncle Fred is one of the last of his generation. An honourable man who served his country in the war. A father who sacrificed much for his children to succeed. A husband whose love lasted 62 years.

    We were blessed to have known you Uncle Fred. I will light a candle for you in thanks for all you have given to our family.

    With much love,

  2. Kelly Jones :

    We were so sorry to hear of your loss. Mr. Fenwick was such a lively man and I know his family was very important to him. I will always remember how kind he was to me when I first started working for Fred (Jr.), and was so unsure of myself, and how much I enjoyed his phone calls to the office at Christmas, when he would sing Christmas Carols to me. We are thinking of you all and wishing you comfort in the memories of your lives together.

    I will always remember Fred for his ability to set goals and to make things happen. He accomplished much in life by his faith, persistence and hard work. He was truly a success and lived a good life. ~ Marjorie Stauffer

    That Man is a Success

    Who has lived well,
    laughed often and loved much;
    Who has gained the respect
    of intelligent men and the love of children;
    Who has filled his niche
    and accomplished his task;
    Who leaves the world better than he found it,
    whether by an improved poppy or a perfect poem or a rescued soul;
    Who never lacked appreciation of earth’s beauty
    or failed to express it;
    Who looked for the best in others
    and gave the best he had.
