FEARS – John “Jack” Benjamin

September 24, 1910 – August 27, 2010

Jack Fears of Calgary passed away on Friday, August 27, 2010 at the age of 99 years.

Jack was born in Medicine Hat and moved to Calgary when he was a child. At the age of fourteen, Jack began working to support himself. He was a “Jack Of All Trades”, and will be remembered for helping anyone in need, welcoming anyone in his home and assisting organizations throughout Calgary. Jack was a Steam Fitter, Field Engineer, Draftsman, and was well learned and self taught in many other areas as well. Jack volunteered at many Catholic Churches throughout Calgary on building committees and pastoral care at Rockyview General Hospital for fourteen years. In his 99 years, Jack did so much for so many people it’s impossible to acknowledge all of his efforts. He remained independent for 97 years.

Jack is survived by his daughter Rosemary Fears of Calgary, three grandchildren; Mike Fears, Dan Fears and Melanie Hogarth, and a son-in-law Tom Hogarth. He was predeceased by his wife Catherine in 1989, a daughter Jeannette Hogarth in 1992, and seven brothers and sisters.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (1307 – 14th Street S.W.) on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (1307 – 14th Street S.W.) on Wednesday, September 01, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

    I knew Jack at Sacred Heart Church when I was Chair of the Lectors for over 25 years. Jack was always friendly and willing to step in when some reader (lector) could not attend.

    He was MOST friendly and amenable to ALL persons at the church

    Rosemary,

    You may not have known but Jack was my Godfather. I still have a small plastic angel that was given to me as a memory of my baptism. I moved from Calgary in 1979 and never moved back which prevented me from getting to know him better but we exchanged Christmas cards most years. I always enjoyed the challenge of reading them without punctuation and sometimes without capitalization at the beginning of sentences. I remember your father with great fondness. I remember talking to him at my parent’s 60th wedding anniversary promising that I would come and celebrate his 100th birthday with him. May his amazing spirit, zest for life & learning inspire & live within all of us. With sympathy, Kathy

    Jack has been a family friend for many years. We first met him when he designed our family shop in Airdrie over 30 years ago.
