FARRIES, A. Iris (nee Maximchuk)

October 06, 1932 –October 23, 2012

The family of Iris Farries is deeply grieved to announce her peaceful passing October 23rd at Sarcee Hospice, Calgary, at the age of 80, following a severe stroke suffered October 4th. Iris was born in Wakaw, SK to parents Michael and Mary Maximchuk, and grew up in both Prince Albert, SK and Edmonton. Surviving her are her dearly loved and loving son Donald and his wife Jackie Stewart, and their sons, Joel and Alex, all of Edmonton; her beloved daughter Nancy Farries and her partner Kelly Smith, his children Katelyn, Mark and Erika of Calgary, and three cherished granddaughters, Elizabeth, Katy and Abby (daughters of Ann). Also her sisters Arlene Crowe and Lorna McMullen, Lorna’s husband Jack, their son David, his wife Jane and sons Cole and Daniel, of Calgary; their daughter Mary Lynne Leggette, her husband Mark, and their daughters Kailey and Emily, of Didsbury.

Iris graduated from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Alberta, in 1955, a tightly knit group of fast friends who endowed the 1955 Pharmacy Class Scholarship at U of A. During her years as a practising pharmacist, she served many clients in several local drugstores and enjoyed a stimulating and caring career. After retirement she travelled with her sisters and other family members and friends to parts of Europe, the United States and most of the provinces of Canada. Life-long friend to many, an ardent sports fan, avid reader, talented at crafts, and incomparable decorator of her home for Christmas and other holidays, she loved collecting special ornaments for all traditional family occasions.

At Iris’s wish there will be no funeral service. A private memorial gathering will be arranged later. Memorial donations will be very much appreciated by the family and can be made to the 1955 Pharmacy Class Scholarship Fund at (Please include 1955 Pharmacy Class Scholarship Fund) or mail c/o Lori Shockey, Director of Development and Alumni Affairs, University of Alberta Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, 2142D, 11361 – 87 Avenue, Edmonton, AB T6G 2E1 or to a charity of your choice. Warmest thanks are given to the nursing and medical staffs of Foothills Hospital Emergency, Stroke Teams and ICU; Unit 64 in the McCaig Tower, and at Sarcee Hospice for their dedicated care. 2. As Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Alberta, and on behalf of the entire Faculty, I offer our condolences on your loss. I had the privilege of meeting and talking with Iris on a few occasions. She was a wonderful person and strong supporter of the profession of pharmacy and our Faculty. The decision to request memorial donations be made to the 1955 Pharmacy Class Scholarship fund will help leave a lasting legacy of support to our student pharmacists. She will be greatly missed.

  4. Olly Chorney (nee Loza) :

I knew Iris at the UofA in the faculty of pharmacy. I was one year behind her and we always looked up to those who were ahead of us. I enjoyed knowing her then as I did many years later when we worked in the same pharmacy in Calgary. She was always helpful, happy and a joy to work with. Please accept my sincerest condolences on her passing.
