October 17, 1938 – September 27, 2012
Dena Farquharson passed away peacefully on 27, September 2012 at the age of 73 at the Foothills Hospital.
Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1938, Dena was the daughter of a pioneering petroleum geologist and grew up in trailers in Northern Alberta and at oil sites in South America. As an adult, and as a pioneering female scientist in her own right, she travelled the world working as a geologist and later with her husband Ian as part of Canadian External Aid. Following retirement from the oil industry, she spent much time birding and traveling what became her cherished landscape of southern Alberta.
She is predeceased by her sister, Sharon, her parents, Verlie Uldene Beard and Gordon Currie Beard, and her husband Ian Bruce Farquharson. She is survived by children Scott (Lynette) of Calgary, Danine (Jamie) of St. John’s, and Laird (Tim) of Toronto, grandchildren Grace, Ian, and Tess and beloved cousin Merle Marples. Dena’s explicit wishes were for no formal funeral or service to be held, but a small family celebration of her life is planned. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alberta Birds of Prey Foundation (www.burrowingowl.com). Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
