FARQUHARSON, Dena (nee Beard)

October 17, 1938 – September 27, 2012

Dena Farquharson passed away peacefully on 27, September 2012 at the age of 73 at the Foothills Hospital.

Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1938, Dena was the daughter of a pioneering petroleum geologist and grew up in trailers in Northern Alberta and at oil sites in South America. As an adult, and as a pioneering female scientist in her own right, she travelled the world working as a geologist and later with her husband Ian as part of Canadian External Aid. Following retirement from the oil industry, she spent much time birding and traveling what became her cherished landscape of southern Alberta.

She is predeceased by her sister, Sharon, her parents, Verlie Uldene Beard and Gordon Currie Beard, and her husband Ian Bruce Farquharson. She is survived by children Scott (Lynette) of Calgary, Danine (Jamie) of St. John’s, and Laird (Tim) of Toronto, grandchildren Grace, Ian, and Tess and beloved cousin Merle Marples. Dena’s explicit wishes were for no formal funeral or service to be held, but a small family celebration of her life is planned. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alberta Birds of Prey Foundation (www.burrowingowl.com). Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Dena Farquharson a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403)243-8200

Condolence Messages

  1. Just a note for Dena 🙂

    Dear Dena,

Thank you for your smiles and conversations. I am so blessed to have met you and have you in my life for the short period of time. You helped me
get me my first gig with the Care Centre. I owe everything to you….you helped me create my success at the care center, my Avon business would not be the same if I hadn’t met you. I will miss our visits and chats. May you rest in peace.

  2. Dear, Scott, Danine and Laird.

I am so sorry to learn about your loss. My wife Lois, who also passed in 2006, was a close long time friend of Dena. We all took geology together at the U of A. On behalf of my family Bruce and Stephanie I pass on our heart felt condolences. Dena will be missed at the Geology Class luncheons we have from time to time.

    Our prayers are with you,
    Art Wilkins

  4. George and Mildred Diamant :

My beautiful, brilliant, witty, scrappy, short, red-haired friend Dena was the source of so many of my most cherished memories. We shared our pride in our families! We shared jokes, books, movies and art reviews and many a Greek salad. I am so sorry she is gone to me.
And I am so sorry Scott, Denine and Laird and your families that your adoring Mom has passed away. She was so proud of you. And so ecstatic when she had a grandchild – that sweet Tess whom she would forward pictures to me by email. And then the wonder of another granddaughter Grace. Dena would relate to me how Grace would toddle over to “her” drawer in Dena’s room and find her toys. And like all grandparents everywhere we would together marvel how clever our grandchildren were.
You have my deepest sympathies. I hope that as you recall the many happy times you spent with her, you will relive the joy as well as today’s sadness.
