December 20, 1920 – March 2, 2015
On March 2, 2015, Betty passed away peacefully with members of her family at her side.
Betty was generous, energetic and spirited as well as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. Betty was born in Calgary, the eldest daughter of Marsh and Lillian Porter. She was a proud, strong and independent Westerner. She attended schools in Calgary, The Banff Mountain School and the University of Alberta before moving to Toronto where she trained for 3 years at The Toronto General Hospital, proudly becoming a Registered Nurse. Following graduation she joined the Royal Canadian Navy and was posted to Halifax during the war. While in Halifax she reunited with Gus, who she first met at the University of Alberta and who was also with the Navy. He became her dearly loved husband and soul mate.
Following the war Betty and Gus returned to Calgary, married, raised their family and lead an active, fun-filled life with family and friends. Betty enjoyed the outdoors, her precious dogs, her time in the mountains while at school in Banff, riding at the family ranch south of Calgary in her early years and during her many years at Sylvan Lake. Betty dearly loved her family. We all feel very blessed to have been in her life. Her eyes shone with life and laughter. We will miss her greatly and cherish our memories of her always.
Those who will fondly remember her include her sons and daughters-in-law, Gordon and Lesley Engbloom and Robert and Nancy Engbloom, her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Liam Christie, her grandchildren and spouses Kristin and Kevin Long, John and Hallie Engbloom, Jeff Christie, Ashley Engbloom, Kaisa and Dan Ouellette, and Kelsey Engbloom, her great-grandchildren, Kylie, Hannah and Nathan and those in her extended family as well. A heartfelt thank you to the wonderful staff with Staywell Manor and Nurse Next Door who so lovingly cared for Betty. A private celebration of life will be held.
