ELLIOTT, Charles (Chuck) Martin

October 11, 1955 – August 23, 2012

Chuck Elliott of Calgary, beloved husband and father, passed away on Thursday, August 23, 2012 at the age of 56 years.

Chuck is survived by his wife Debra Elliott; his son Thomas Stewart Elliott; his mother Mary Elliott of North Bay, ON; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Jane and Bob Graham of Boston, NY, Louise Sargent of North Bay and Garry Hartwick (Shirley) of Winnipeg, MB, and their families. He was predeceased by his father Thomas Edwin Elliott; his sister Elizabeth Hartwick; and brother-in-law Bryan Sargent. An animal lover, Chuck also leaves his beloved Chihuahua, Ava, and his Siamese cats, Joc Ko and Ming Po.

Chuck touched many with his thoughtfulness, kindness and humour. He loved baseball and was involved with Cal West Little League for ten years, treasuring his role as Coach Chuck.

Chuck enjoyed a wonderful career in radio and television. Born and raised in North Bay, ON, he migrated west, working first in Prince Albert and then in Regina, SK. He landed in Calgary in 1986, where a highlight of his career was running around for sixteen days covering the 1988 Winter Olympics. He fine-tuned his unique delivery and style at CJAY 92, AM 106 and QR 77. Chuck spent the last fifteen years helping produce the Morning News at Global and he loved contributing weekly movie reviews. He was sharp, well read and very witty. Everyone who worked with him has a funny story to share. Always smiling and positive, he was a great member of the team.

  2. Deb & Thomas,

My name is Lee and I’m a video editor on Global’s morning show. I’m going away today and unfortunately won’t be around for Chuck’s memorial service. I’ve felt similar loss in my life and hope you guys are coping okay. I just wanted to share some of my memories of Chuck with you. Although I am mourning his passing, it’s hard for me to think about my times with Chuck without cracking a smile. He was such a positive presence in the newsroom, always chuckling and joking.. He was always very thankful for the little extra things I would do to try and help out. He thanked me with Christmas cards and gifts of which I appreciated – but was mostly humbled by his generosity. I could tell he just loved to make people happy.
We got along famously and I loved to get his take on movies. He was so knowledgeable and passionate and was always very fair even when reviewing such gems as “Shark Night 3D” with David Hasselhoff. His enthusiasm for film is obviously well known, but he also spoke glowingly about his family. He always sounded especially proud of Thomas and mentioned him often. I wish we could’ve been friends long enough for us to exchange parenting stories.
I’ll miss cutting his “best bets” segment, I’ll miss the way he greeted me personally EVERY morning and I’ll miss his farewell on my way out the door: “Thanks boss!” with a big thumbs up. Chuck’s legacy to me is one of kindness, friendship, positivity and humour. I will miss him terribly. This place will never be the same without him.
I hope you find some solace in the knowledge that Chuck was very well loved and respected among all of his friends here at Global. He certainly left a huge impression on me and I feel I’m a better person for having known him. Please accept my deepest sympathies..

    Sincerely,

    Lee Dillman

  6. Deb & Thomas,
I was so saddened to hear of Chuck’s sudden passing.
We’d known each other since the ’88 Olympics and every time our paths crossed since then, it was like we could just pick up our conversation where we’d left it last time. He was a such a gentle, grounded guy with a great sense of humour. My favourite Chuck story was when he was doing news at CJAY, and a squirrel had short-circuited an electrical transformer downtown. Chuck reported that “Mr. Bushy-Tail had had his acorns welded together.”
It was vintage Chuck. He will be greatly missed but everytime I think of him, I’ll smile.
    My deepest sympathies.

  7. Natacha Leblanc :

    Deb & Thomas,
I am very sad to hear about Chuck’s sudden passing. I met Chuck at GlobalTV in 1999. He was the first one to come greet me in person. He came to see me every morning, for almost 10 years while I worked there, with some goodies from the newsroom. He would say: “gotta keep the IT girl in the good books”! He was such a nice guy. So funny, so pleasant, always talked about you guys. I can’t help but smile when I think of Chuck. By far one of the best guys I have ever met. Everyone just loved Chuck. He made me laugh so many times with his funny stories.
    My deepest sympathies to you.
    Sincerely,
    Natacha Leblanc

  8. Dear Deb and Thomas,

I am deeply saddened by Chuck’s death. I had the pleasure of seeing Chuck regularly over the past 15 years when I would appear on the Morning News Show. Chuck was always a pleasure to be with. He was warm, considerate, funny, and always provided good advice. He was a kind and nice man and had the gift of making others feel good. I can’t tell you the number of times that he made me feel good and left me in stitches with his jokes. I know from our many conversations that he cherished and was very proud of his family. I will miss him. Please accept my deepest condolences. Sincerely,
    David Taras

  9. Brian and Joan Gauld :

So shocked to hear of Chuck’s passing. We would enjoy running in to you two at Safeway, and listening to him tell of the latest goings-on. We remember him for his wit and charm, but he wasn’t a bad ball player either, all those years ago when you met. He touched many people in many ways…a special character. Thomas has a good role model to follow. Rest well, my friend.

They say to remember the good times…..you should have enough to last forever. Our deepest sympathies to you both.

  12. Dear Thomas,

MY thoughts and prayers are with and your Mom. Your Dad was an amazing man. His wicked sense of humour and the respect and support that he gave to you and our Killarney classroom, when you were my student, was brilliant. Give your Mom a hug and know that like many other people, I will hold you close in my heart. With great kindness and respect.

  14. I had the good fortune to work with Chuck as a reporter in Ottawa. While we never met in person, we certainly got to know each other well.

He was the calm voice on the other end of the line and over the years I realized Chuck’s humour, intelligence, patience, and humanity made morning TV possible and worthwhile.

He will be missed. I hope you find the support you need.

    Deepest sympathies —

I knew Chuck from the “hill” during our days at AM106 and CJAY. We had the greatest of times fishing out at Allen Bill Pond in K-Country. Later at QR I had the pleasure of re-connecting with Chuck and his movie reviews on air. A great guy, genuine and one of a kind.

  20. With deep sadness I would like would to express my condolences to Chuck’s family during this difficult time in your lives. I worked with him on the morning show for many years and he always had a greeting and a smile for everyone. In our busy deadline bound world, sometimes its easy to pass your co-workers with your head down in your clipboards, but that wasn’t Chuck. I will miss his smile and his positive take on life. We will all miss him!

Peace be with you & God Bless.

  21. Grant Schutte :

I loved Chuck, I worked with him in PA when he moved west. A great guy, funny and caring. I helped teach the Easterner how to fish and was around when he rolled his friends car coming back from a fishing trip ( Chuck blamed it on a bee coming through the window). My heartfelt prayers go out to the family. He was a great guy, a jokester, smart, considerate, and my friend..
