ELFNER, Billie Merle (nee Balsom)

Peacefully passed away surrounded by family on Monday, September 10, 2012, after a six year courageous battle with ovarian cancer.

Billie is survived by her husband of 25 years, Donald, son Adam and daughter Beverly, as well as by brothers Robert, Velmore, Ivar, Patrick, Joseph and Rockwell Balsom and sister Yvonne Pyrah, Dawn Pardy and Deena Rowe. She was predeceased by her father William and mother Effie Balsom and by sister Darcie Porter and brother Murray Balsom.

Billie was born in Come-by-Chance, Newfoundland on October 29, 1952 and grew up in Clarenville. She attended trade school in Bonavista and moved to Ottawa in 1977, where she worked for the next 10 years as a Correspondence Assistant to the Rt. Hon. Joe Clark, in the offices of the Leader of the Official Opposition, the Prime Minister’s Office and the Minister of External Affairs.

After her wedding, she relocated to Regina, SK for five years, starting her family and enjoying membership in Newcomers Society. Upon relocation to Burlington, Ontario in 1991, she continued her membership in the Newcomers Society where she made more lifelong friends. In March 1993, she joined Royal Lepage Real Estate Services as an Administrative Assistant, a career that would continue until illness forced her to reluctantly relinquish her professional work in 2008.

Billie was heavily involved in the Parent Teacher Associations at Robert Warrren and Dr. E.P. Scarlett schools, volunteered in Charitable endeavours, particularly the annual CIBC ‘Run for the Cure” and took an active interest in the federal and provincial Progressive Conservative parties. Throughout her life, she made many friendships from coast-to-coast and was known for her love of life, trustworthiness and selfless support and interest in the needs of others. She found comfort during these last years of illness in her faith, as well as her extended family and friends at The Salvation Army.

In a published letter to the Calgary Herald in 2009, Billie wrote: “You have all touched my heart. God Bless and remember: we are only passing this way once. Embrace Life!”

Funeral Services will be held at the Salvation Army’s Glenmore Temple, 921 – 68 Avenue S.W., Calgary on Saturday, September 15, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. with Col. Wm. Ratcliffe officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in the Salvation Army Cemetery in Clarenville, NL. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family would like to thank all those who assisted Billie over the last six years, in particular Mr. Ted Zaharko and his agents and staff at Royal Lepage, her dear friend and colleague Connie Kohut, her own two nightingales, sisters Deena and Dawn, her oncologist, Dr. Prayfull Ghatage, and the nurses at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and Southwood Hospice. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to the Children’s Wish Foundation or to the National Ovarian Cancer Association, 105B, 1409 Edmonton Trail N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 3K8.

In living memory of Billie, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403)243-8200

On behalf of the family of Bob Devolin, I offer sincere condolences to you, Don and Joyce and your family at this sad time. The times we met Billie at family birthdays or just at Tim Hortons or Southcentre, she truly shined as a human being, always upbeat and smiling. She always left us with smiles on our faces. We often said it was hard to believe she was so sick as her spirit was so strong. That spirit will live on in her children and her many close friends though she’ll be missed. After Bob’s passing in July and knowing his spirit lives on, we pray that Bob and Billie are reacquainted & smiling down on the family now. God Bless!

We have heard many a good story of them growing up, and the good times they shared. Billy was such an amazing woman, one who loved life, and was a true genuine person, with a heart of gold. I join with so many others who knew Billie in offering our deepest sympathy on her passing. Although it is little consolation at this sad time, it should be of some satisfaction to know that in her passing you can celebrate the end of a very long and productive life.

The measure of a life well-lived is not in how much money one has or what possessions they have accumulated, but rather through the lives they touched and the sorrow they leave behind. If the outpouring of sympathy on her loss is any indication, and it most certainly is, you can proudly and confidently say that her’s indeed was a life well-lived.

May you find peace and comfort in knowing that her loss is felt by all who knew and loved her.

Over the last few years I have come to know and love Aunt B. As a child I knew of Aunt Billie who moved west. Since living here she has opened her doors to me and Lux on numerous occasions and always made me feel more then loved. I lived her crazy moments of barking back at Duke and her always high spirits, even if her feet were soaking in cold water. She never judged me for not calling or visiting but was thankful to see me each and Everytime I seen her. God bless your beautiful soul. You were a fest of a woman, a great mother, and from what I read a much loved person.

  72. The biggest thing in this sadness of losing such a great Aunt and person, is that whenever we need the strength to carry on, we can think of Aunt B because no other person I know was as strong willed till the end. Love you auntie and praise the lord as he keeps you safe.

Let us cherish our favorite memories of such a wonderful person, as she’ll forever be in our hearts. Love and miss you xo – Adam

PS : Got a foot rub waiting for when I see you on the other side

Billie was my long time friend. What meant most to me was that she always made me feel I was a special part of her life. Where Billie was, there was laughter. I will miss her.

We just heard the news of Billies passing and we are sending our thoughts and prayers to Billies family. We are very saddened for the news but we know how sweet a Christian lady she was and we know where she is today. Billie always asked how our family was, even through her tough times. Deena, we’re so sorry to hear of your loss. Love from Jean and Wayne Agar and family
