Peacefully passed away surrounded by family on Monday, September 10, 2012, after a six year courageous battle with ovarian cancer.
Billie is survived by her husband of 25 years, Donald, son Adam and daughter Beverly, as well as by brothers Robert, Velmore, Ivar, Patrick, Joseph and Rockwell Balsom and sister Yvonne Pyrah, Dawn Pardy and Deena Rowe. She was predeceased by her father William and mother Effie Balsom and by sister Darcie Porter and brother Murray Balsom.
Billie was born in Come-by-Chance, Newfoundland on October 29, 1952 and grew up in Clarenville. She attended trade school in Bonavista and moved to Ottawa in 1977, where she worked for the next 10 years as a Correspondence Assistant to the Rt. Hon. Joe Clark, in the offices of the Leader of the Official Opposition, the Prime Minister’s Office and the Minister of External Affairs.
After her wedding, she relocated to Regina, SK for five years, starting her family and enjoying membership in Newcomers Society. Upon relocation to Burlington, Ontario in 1991, she continued her membership in the Newcomers Society where she made more lifelong friends. In March 1993, she joined Royal Lepage Real Estate Services as an Administrative Assistant, a career that would continue until illness forced her to reluctantly relinquish her professional work in 2008.
Billie was heavily involved in the Parent Teacher Associations at Robert Warrren and Dr. E.P. Scarlett schools, volunteered in Charitable endeavours, particularly the annual CIBC ‘Run for the Cure” and took an active interest in the federal and provincial Progressive Conservative parties. Throughout her life, she made many friendships from coast-to-coast and was known for her love of life, trustworthiness and selfless support and interest in the needs of others. She found comfort during these last years of illness in her faith, as well as her extended family and friends at The Salvation Army.
In a published letter to the Calgary Herald in 2009, Billie wrote: “You have all touched my heart. God Bless and remember: we are only passing this way once. Embrace Life!”
Funeral Services will be held at the Salvation Army’s Glenmore Temple, 921 – 68 Avenue S.W., Calgary on Saturday, September 15, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. with Col. Wm. Ratcliffe officiating.
