EGGLESTON, Edwina Anne (nee Holmes)

July 18, 1922 – Easington Lane, County Durham, England
August 25, 2013 – Calgary, AB

Edwina Anne Eggleston passed away on Sunday, August 25, 2013 at the age of 91 years.

Edwina was born on July 18, 1922 in Easington Lane, County Durham, England. She was the eldest child born to Ralph and Elizabeth Holmes.

Edwina was educated at the Sunderland Church High School for girls and the Sunderland Technical College where she graduated as a pharmacist. One of her greatest achievements was to be awarded a certificate by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, honouring her fifty years as a licenced pharmacist.

Edwina married Angus Eggleson on June 4, 1945. Angus was a childhood friend and neighbour who took Edwina to her first day at school. She was five and he was six years old. During their marriage of fifty-nine years, Edwina and Angus lived in many places including Elloughton in East Yorkshire, Shifnal in Shropshire, Belfast in Northern Ireland, Maidenhead in Berkshire, New Malden in Surrey and Midhurst in West Sussex.

One of Edwina’s greatest challenges was Angus’s passing in June 2004. Later that year she emigrated from England to Canada where she resided in Calgary, AB until her passing.

Edwina was a lifetime member of the Anglican Church until her illness prevented her from attending church. She was a member of the Women’s Institute in England where she served as a treasurer of the Bepton WI for many years. She was also a member of the Midhurst Handicraft Guild.

Needlework, reading, poetry, walking by the sea and in the country were some of the pastimes that Edwina enjoyed. Her greatest pleasures were dogs and chocolate and most of all, ice cream. One of her favourite holidays was spent with Angus at Chateau Lake Louise to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1995.

Edwina is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Michael and Anna Eggleston of Winnipeg, MB; daughter and son-in-law Gwynneth and Derek Reid of Calgary, AB; brother and sister-in-law Derek and Hazel Holmes of Nanuki, Kenya; grandchildren, Brian (Patti) and Jason Eggleston and Roisin and Jen Reid; great-grandchildren, Dylon, Justin, Brendan, Kayla and Samantha; nephews Richard, Malcolm and Adrian Holmes; and nieces Susan Renilson and Ceilia Hardy. She was predeceased by her loving husband Angus; parents Ralph Edwin and Elizabeth Holmes; and brothers Ralph and Keith Holmes.
