EGGERER, Edwin

February 17, 1944 – March 17, 2013

Edwin Eggerer of Airdrie, AB passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, March 17, 2013 in the ICU at the Peter Lougheed Centre at the age of 69 years.

Edwin was born in Augsburg, Germany to Walburga and Alois Eggerer. His family immigrated to Winnipeg, MB in 1951, where Ed spent his early life. While attending Sisler High School in Winnipeg he met his future bride. He went on to study at the University of North Dakota before moving back to Manitoba to explore different professional opportunities in Brandon and The Pas.

He and his family moved to Airdrie in 1980 and in alliance with his two close friends, Milt Brandson and Keith Wilson, opened the Century 21 Real Estate office. It was a career that he loved and worked hard at and one that enabled him to be involved in helping his small community grow into thriving city.

Ed was a proud member and past president of the Airdrie Chamber of Commerce, Airdrie Rotary Club and the Calgary Stampede Band Committee. He was also one of the founding members of the Bethany Care Centre and the S.O.S. Society at George McDougall High School.

Ed devoted thirty-three years to democracy in Canada and around the world. He acted as returning officer for Elections Canada in Churchill and The Pas Manitoba, and Wild Rose, Alberta. He was also part of a United Nations delegation to Cambodia to facilitate their first democratic election.

He was honored with many awards for his service including the Paul Harris Award as well, most recently, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Ed was a man who wanted to be involved and make a difference at every opportunity. He loved the community that he lived in and valued his friendships second to none. He will be sadly missed for his compassion, generosity, wisdom and integrity.

Ed will be forever missed by his wife Sylvia of forty-seven years and his family, Devon and Jim Sawby, Jonna Eggerer and Andy McQuade.
He was most proud of his grandsons, Carter and Davis Sawby and was anxiously awaiting the arrival of Jonna and Andy’s baby girl. He will also be missed by his younger sister Linda Eggerer of Toronto; as well as nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

The family would like to invite everyone to a Memorial Service to Celebrate Edwin’s Life at the Airdrie Town and Country Centre (103, 275 Jensen Drive N.E., Airdrie, AB) on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Edwin Eggerer, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Airdrie Funeral Home, 300 TOWERLANE DRIVE, AIRDRIE, AB. Telephone: (403) 948 1100.

Sylvia we were so shocked to here about Ed’s passing, assuming wrongly that once in the hospital all would be fine. Ed was my first boss in real estate 23yrs ago, and has always graced our offices ever since. We always chatted about the market, City, Provincial, and Federal politics, and I always looked forward to his visits. I would have chatted for hours with him, but he never stayed more than 20 minutes, he never sat down, and then he was off! He was so happy to get his new McKee Homes coat just a few short weeks ago. Elaine, Grace, Ruth & I will miss him greatly…

    Dear Sylvia and family,
We were so sorry to hear about Ed. When I phoned my Mom to tell her, she said that when Dad, Jack Hebert and Ed were forming the Airdrie Rotary Club, that Ed was Dad’s favourite Rotarian. He always enjoyed making up his Rotary meetings in Airdrie so that he could visit with Ed. He also enjoyed the times they had on the Stampede Band Committee. Ed was a real gentle man and will be missed.
Sincerely, Wendie (Elviss) Krysak and family

  14. Diane Bruyere :

To Ed’s family and friends, I offer my most sincere condolences at this difficult time. As a former employee of Elections Canada, I had the pleasure of working with Ed for many, many years, as one of the people responsible for training and supporting returning officers. I had tremendous respect for Ed’s professionalism, sense of humour and commitment to his community and to democracy. He worked very very hard to ensure that everyone who was entitled to do so was able to vote in vast areas of our beautiful country, first in Manitoba, then in Alberta. It was my pleasure to present to Ed a long-time service award from Canada’s Chief Electoral Officer at one of our RO meetings following his retirement; he was very touched by this gesture as he was the first RO in Canada to receive such an award, and it made the initiative for us very worthwhile. I am certain he will be missed by everyone who knew him. My prayers and thoughts are with you at this time.

  22. Lynn Cook-(Stanhope) :

    Dear Sylvia:
I don’t know if you will even remember me, but I worked with D’Arcy in The Pas in 1973-4 and met you and Ed there. I remember some wonderful times there, (they didn’t include the incredible cold or the packs of roving dogs running up and down the river behind Bancroft and Company!) You and Ed were so wonderfully kind to a naive, single young lawyer who had no idea what she was getting into when she arrived in your town. Ed was wonderful when D’Arcy got sick and had to be rescued from his trailer. I thought we’d never lose touch but here it is, almost over 38 years later and we have. I just felt I had to share my sympathies on the loss of Ed, I know how devoted you were to one another. He cared about people a lot and never seemed to judge anybody. I know you will miss him terribly. I left The Pas, then spent 4 years prosecuting in Dauphin, where I met my husband and we soon moved to Alberta, where I started practicing and did so for about 6 more years until becoming a Judge in Prov. Court nearly 28 years ago. Time flies. If you need a friend, let me know, or even drop me an email if you like. I don’t know where you are in your life but there’s definintely room in mine, for you. Take care, Fondly, Lynn
