EBBELS, James William (Jim)

April 15, 1948 – September 3, 2017

Jim suffered sudden cardiac arrest in hospital on September 3, 2017. Born an identical twin in Regina, SK., he attended Sheldon-Williams Collegiate in Regina, obtained a BA, University of Alberta and a Masters in Environmental Design, University of Calgary. He was an accomplished sportsman: a nationally ranked junior tennis player; a basketball star through high school; a proud member of the U of A Golden Bears Basketball Team; an avid skier and an ever-hopeful golfer. An initial interest in art grew into a fascination with architecture. To Jim, architecture was a remarkable entre to a remarkable world and his career took him around the globe. He recalled with particular pride collaborating across 35 countries to deliver the World Headquarters for the United Nations Environment Program in Nairobi Kenya, and the impact that was felt when delivering the Alberta Children’s Hospital. He said his experiences were richer and more expansive than he dreamed they ever could be. Jim was a fabulous storyteller and a “really good guy”. Anyone who ever met him enjoyed his company and presence.

He is mourned by his wife Bonnie, daughter Alecia, Alecia’s mother Elisabeth, his mother Ruth, two brothers; Hal (Donna) of Calgary and Bill (Sheila) of Cape May, NJ; two sisters; Virginia (Tim Cosbey) of Gabriola Island, BC; and Andrea (Callum Hill) of New Westminster, BC. Nieces, Tannis (Steve Gaffney), Kelly, and Lendon; Nephews, Rob, Calen, Will and Super Dave.

Jim was predeceased by his father, William Dennis in 2006 and his beloved twin Jack in 2010.

A Memorial Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at 2:00 p.m., followed immediately by a reception at the Calgary Golf & Country Club. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
